Greek Parliament Enacts 10% Cryptocurrency Profit Tax Commencing 2027

Starting January 1, 2027, Greece will implement its comprehensive cryptocurrency taxation system, featuring a 15% tax on staking and lending revenues while excluding taxes on crypto-to-crypto exchanges.

Lawmakers in Greece have given approval to new legislation that will impose a 10% tax on profits derived from cryptocurrency transactions, setting forth comprehensive regulations for digital asset holders in advance of the 2027 implementation date.

On Thursday, the Hellenic Parliament voted to pass these taxation provisions as part of a comprehensive legislative package that encompasses loan supervision, debt protection measures and broader financial market regulatory reforms.

The approved legislation establishes a 10% taxation rate on gains realized through the sale of cryptocurrency assets, though it provides an exemption for investors whose yearly profits remain below 500 euros ($560), as reported Friday by Oikonomikos Tachydromos, a local financial news outlet. Implementation of this new regulatory structure is slated for Jan. 1, 2027.

Additionally, the law establishes a 15% tax rate on earnings generated through staking activities, cryptocurrency lending operations and liquidity provision to decentralized finance protocols. Purchasing goods or services with cryptocurrency may result in capital gains tax liability, whereas exchanging one digital asset for another will not create a taxable event, according to the report.

The Ministry of National Economy and Finance of Greece initially unveiled this tax proposal in October. The new law provides investors with a 12-month window to come forward and voluntarily disclose any previously unreported cryptocurrency profits. Following their declaration, they are required to remit the applicable tax within 60 days to circumvent penalties and accumulated interest charges.
