Self-described 'crypto king' from Canada to defend himself in fraud case

Between 2021 and 2022, Aiden Pleterski allegedly operated a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme that ultimately led to his kidnapping and subsequent criminal prosecution.

A social media influencer who branded himself as a 'crypto king' and allegedly swindled investors by promising substantial returns on cryptocurrency investments is scheduled to face criminal proceedings next week, over two years following the filing of charges in Canada.

Aiden Pleterski, a social media figure who allegedly defrauded his followers of approximately $30 million during the period spanning 2021 to 2022, is slated to stand trial on Oct. 5 at Ontario's Superior Court of Justice. In May 2024, Canadian law enforcement authorities brought charges against Pleterski for fraud and money laundering after he purportedly solicited investment funds and made fraudulent statements regarding "large weekly profits through savvy investments."

Based on a CBC News report published Monday, Pleterski has been unsuccessful in his attempts to postpone the trial to secure legal representation, and will be forced to act as his own defense attorney in court. The proceedings are anticipated to continue for approximately four weeks, with the fraud charge by itself carrying a potential maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment should he be found guilty.

Pleterski joined the ranks of numerous prominent cryptocurrency industry personalities who encountered criminal prosecution for purported misconduct in 2022, a year marked by declining market conditions and multiple corporate bankruptcy filings. High-ranking executives from collapsed cryptocurrency exchanges FTX and Celsius subsequently faced criminal charges in the United States.

During December 2022, a group of men, several of whom were alleged to be victims of his fraudulent scheme, reportedly abducted and subjected Pleterski to torture over a three-day period. These individuals allegedly made demands for payment from Pleterski, issued threats against his life and his family members, and compelled him to record video statements detailing his involvement in the purported fraudulent activities.
