Zuckerberg acknowledges slower-than-anticipated progress in AI agent development

The Meta CEO's remarks coincided with the company's global rollout of Meta Business Agent across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger platforms for enterprise users.

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, acknowledged that the company's AI agent development is advancing at a slower pace than initially anticipated, despite ongoing substantial investments in the emerging technology by both technology companies and cryptocurrency enterprises.

During a corporate meeting held on Thursday, Zuckerberg stated that "the trajectory of the agentic development over at least the last four months hasn't really accelerated in the way that we expected," as reported by Reuters, which had access to a recording of the discussion.

The wager on widespread agent adoption hasn't "come to fruition yet," according to Zuckerberg, who also noted that company leadership initiated an aggressive expansion into agentic infrastructure during January, partly driven by concerns that they weren't advancing "fast enough."

Notwithstanding the more gradual advancement, Zuckerberg indicated his expectation that the company's artificial intelligence investments would begin delivering returns in the coming three to six months.

The Meta CEO's remarks provide a dose of reality for both technology and cryptocurrency companies wagering that autonomous agents will rapidly emerge as significant users of blockchain-based payment systems. Meta, alongside numerous crypto enterprises, has made substantial commitments to agentic artificial intelligence, with multiple companies restructuring their business strategies to accommodate autonomous AI agents.

During May, Meta eliminated approximately 10% of its staff and relocated around 7,000 workers to teams focused on artificial intelligence — a reorganization that Zuckerberg conceded was less smooth than desired, with leadership misjudging the appropriate timeline.

Meta expands AI agent feature on three platforms

The concerns expressed by Zuckerberg arrive at the same time that Meta launched its Meta Business Agent on a global scale for commercial enterprises using Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp on Thursday.

According to Meta, the Business Agent possesses the capability to address customer questions, provide product suggestions and complete transactions without requiring human involvement.

Additionally, Zuckerberg disclosed in March that he was developing a personal artificial intelligence agent intended to assist with his decision-making responsibilities in his role as CEO.

The cryptocurrency sector has emerged as an enthusiastic adopter of this technology, with prominent figures such as Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire numbered among the industry leaders forecasting that AI agents will evolve into the primary users of blockchain-powered payment systems in the years ahead.

Multiple significant integrations that advance AI agent-powered stablecoin transactions have appeared in recent months, including a notable implementation by Amazon Web Services in May, during which it incorporated Coinbase's x402 payments protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, enabling agents to conduct transactions using the USDC (USDC) stablecoin.

During April, cryptocurrency wallet startup Oobit introduced a Visa-backed virtual card designed for AI agents to execute online transactions in USDt (USDT) on behalf of commercial entities.

AI agent payments adoption lagging

Notwithstanding these integrations, available data indicates that AI-agent transaction activity conducted on the blockchain continues to be relatively limited, with data from Artemis revealing that merely $2 million in trading volume has been processed through the AI agent-compatible x402 protocol during the past 30 days.
