Unexpected Employment Data Pushes Bitcoin Below 80K Threshold

Unexpected Employment Data Pushes Bitcoin Below 80K Threshold

BTC experiences selloff following August jobs report that exceeded forecasts by three times, sparking fresh doubt about Federal Reserve's upcoming September 16 interest rate announcement.

Key points:

  • The US economy added 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in August, nearly triple economists' consensus estimate of 56,000.
  • Bitcoin sold off from $81,300 to local lows of $78,600 following the data, before recovering to $79,500.
  • A rival Bitcoin fork using the Blake2b algorithm saw its first trading activity, with coins changing hands at $350 on exchange Neoxa.

Employment figures surpass predictions by factor of three

Friday's data release revealed that 162,000 nonfarm payroll positions were created in the US economy during August, substantially exceeding the consensus forecast from economists of approximately 56,000 positions. Following this announcement, Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a selloff that drove its price down from $81,300 to reach local bottom levels of $78,600. As of publication time, the cryptocurrency is valued at $79,500.

The significance of current economic releases has been amplified considering the division that persists in rate forecasts prior to the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) gathering scheduled for Sept. 15-16. During the tenure of previous Federal Reserve chairs, market expectations before FOMC meetings were generally well-established. Nevertheless, Chair Kevin Warsh's approach of limiting forward guidance, combined with the presence of possible dissenting voices within the committee, has contributed to heightened uncertainty.

Following Thursday's comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller indicating his preference for maintaining current rates pending forthcoming inflation figures, Polymarket probability indicators shifted to show 60% likelihood of a pause versus 40% for a 25 basis-point interest rate increase. The Friday employment report, however, pushed the implied probabilities back to an even 50/50 distribution.

Following the release of the robust employment figures, President Donald Trump issued fresh demands for the Fed Board regarding rate reductions. "The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart - BE PATRIOTS for a change," he stated in a Truth Social post and continued: "High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won't allow that to happen!"

While Trump had repeatedly criticized former Chair Jerome Powell over his reluctance to lower rates, he had refrained from directing comparable remarks toward Warsh until Friday's statement.

Blake2b Bitcoin variant sees initial market activity

Following the BIP-110 soft fork implementation on Aug. 7, Bitcoin's network experienced a temporary division into two separate competing chains: one chain adopting BIP-110's updated protocol rules and another chain maintaining the pre-existing ruleset. The chain following BIP-110 primarily stagnated due to insufficient computational power being allocated by miners to continue building that particular chain.

Advocates of BIP-110 interpreted miners' unwillingness to support the user-activated soft fork (UASF) as confirmation that Bitcoin's mining infrastructure has grown excessively centralized. This critique gained additional weight from the lack of a coordinated response from the Bitcoin Core faction, such as implementing a user-rejected soft fork (URSF). Currently, just five mining pools command the overwhelming majority of Bitcoin's total hashrate, consolidating substantial power over which blockchain version gets extended and which transactions receive block inclusion.

As a countermeasure, a segment of BIP-110 advocates, under the leadership of LukeDashjr, elected to maintain the BIP-110 chain while implementing a modification to the proof-of-work algorithm, switching to Blake2b to enable a fresh, more distributed group of miners to participate using DATUM gateway technology. This corresponding hard fork commenced on Aug. 30. Any address containing SHA-256 Bitcoin prior to Aug. 7 (and potentially thereafter) will possess an equivalent balance on the Blake2b Bitcoin version. Currently, Neoxa remains the sole exchange offering Blake2b Bitcoin listings. Despite limited liquidity at present, Blake2b coins are currently valued at $350 when traded against USDC with a 1.1% spread.
