Swiss regulator greenlight's nation's inaugural retail Bitcoin ETF
Switzerland's financial watchdog pointed to increasing demand for digital currency products, noting that several asset managers have filed applications for Bitcoin ETFs.

Switzerland's financial oversight body, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), has given its blessing to what the agency describes as the nation's inaugural Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) that provides direct exposure to Bitcoin and is available for everyday retail investors to purchase.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the financial watchdog pointed to an "increasing interest" in digital currency investment products, with particular emphasis on Bitcoin (BTC).
Though the regulator did not disclose which fund issuer received the approval, it revealed that numerous providers have either filed or made public their intentions to submit Bitcoin ETF applications.
Back in August 2025, SIX Swiss Exchange made a public announcement revealing that iShares would commence trading of a Bitcoin exchange-traded product, with complete backing from BTC stored in cold storage facilities managed by Coinbase Custody International Limited.
This regulatory approval represents the removal of a major regulatory barrier for the introduction of Switzerland's first exchange-traded fund accessible to retail customers that provides direct investment exposure to Bitcoin. The official statement did not include any information regarding when the product would be available for trading.
Back in 2021, FINMA initially gave authorization to a fund designed for qualified investors that primarily allocates capital into a diversified portfolio of cryptocurrencies. According to the regulator, it provided an exemption from conventional risk-diversification guidelines, pointing to Bitcoin's "long trading history and a particularly high trading volume" when compared to other digital assets.
Nevertheless, the regulatory authority stressed that BTC investments come with market risks, including the potential for invested capital to experience a substantial decline in value, referencing the high volatility characteristic of cryptocurrencies.
Switzerland has established itself as one of the most welcoming European nations when it comes to cryptocurrency adoption. In 2023, the Swiss city of Lugano implemented Bitcoin and Tether USDt (USDT) payment options for all municipal fees, positioning itself among the world's first city administrations to take such a step.
