Record $638M in Crypto Token Buybacks Dominated by Hyperliquid and Pump.fun
A historic $638 million has been allocated to token buybacks by cryptocurrency projects in 2026 to date, with two platforms—Hyperliquid and Pump.fun—responsible for approximately 90% of this total.

According to reports, the decentralized exchange platform Hyperliquid along with memecoin launchpad Pump.fun have been responsible for close to 90% of an unprecedented $638 million in cryptocurrency token buybacks executed by various crypto projects throughout 2026 thus far.
Cryptocurrency projects have deployed a historic $638 million toward repurchasing their native digital assets year-to-date, representing a significant increase from the $545 million recorded during the corresponding timeframe in 2025 and a dramatic surge from just $366,000 in 2024, based on data from Allium Labs referenced in a Financial Times report published Monday. Among this $638 million total, Hyperliquid contributed approximately $370 million while Pump.fun was responsible for close to $200 million.
Token buyback mechanisms function similarly to stock repurchase programs executed by publicly traded corporations, where companies acquire their own shares to bolster stock valuations and enhance returns delivered to current shareholders.
Despite token buybacks remaining an uncommon practice across the cryptocurrency sector, an increasing number of projects are embracing this strategy. Last Thursday, the Ethena Foundation initiated a voting process on a fee-switch proposal that would direct 95% of net revenue generated from Ethena's primary business operations toward the repurchase of Ethena (ENA) tokens. Following the announcement of this proposal, the ENA token experienced a 10.7% price increase that same day.
HYPE, PUMP Outperform Crypto Market as Buybacks Boost Token Valuations
Both the Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Pump.fun (PUMP) tokens have demonstrated superior performance compared to the wider cryptocurrency market downturn experienced during 2026 to date.
Year-to-date performance shows HYPE climbing 145% while PUMP advanced 109%, contrasting sharply with Bitcoin's (BTC) 10% price decline and the overall crypto market capitalization's 11.9% decrease over the identical timeframe, based on data from TradingView.
Nearly 99% of Hyperliquid's revenue stream is allocated toward token buyback initiatives. On Aug. 6, Hyperliquid disclosed second-quarter revenue totaling $169 million, with $141 million of that amount channeled into HYPE token buybacks.
Approximately 50% of Pump.Fun's net protocol revenue is designated for token repurchase programs. Based on its average daily revenue calculated over the previous 90 days, the memecoin launchpad platform currently generates $420 million in annualized revenue.
According to Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan's comments from earlier in August, cryptocurrency valuations have the potential to double over the coming two years as blockchain protocols progressively utilize revenue streams to finance token buyback and burn mechanisms, thereby delivering greater value back to token holders.
