Crypto Biz: Bitcoin's surge pushes AI narratives to the sidelines
As cryptocurrency markets climb higher, corporations are placing larger bets on direct crypto holdings, bringing institutional adoption and treasury strategies back into the spotlight.

The August cryptocurrency surge tested how committed corporations truly are to digital assets. Mining companies that had pivoted toward artificial intelligence investors during the prolonged crypto winter are now behaving like highly leveraged Bitcoin (BTC) plays once more, as Strategy and Strive continue accumulating thousands of additional Bitcoin for their corporate reserves.
This same pattern of concentration is emerging across multiple fronts. Bitmine continues marching toward controlling 5% of all circulating Ether (ETH), despite carrying billions in paper losses, while a coalition of 21 prominent financial institutions charts a separate course by creating stablecoins designed for payments and settlement functions.
Mining stocks surge as Bitcoin rally reignites sector interest
August's Bitcoin price recovery sent struggling mining equities soaring by as much as 67%, flipping a narrative that had previously favored mining operations transitioning to artificial intelligence and highlighting how sensitive the mining sector remains to BTC price movements.
According to BlocksBridge, three key factors drove the rally: expanding US Treasury liquidity that enabled share buybacks, fresh regulatory optimism following cryptocurrency discussions at the White House, and a dramatic short squeeze that forced liquidations exceeding $1.6 billion across the market.
This outperformance indicates investors are potentially favoring direct Bitcoin exposure again, though the mining industry continues confronting challenges related to expensive AI data-center infrastructure buildouts.
Strategy and Strive expand Bitcoin treasuries during late August rally
During the final week of August, Strategy and Strive poured billions into Bitcoin acquisitions for their corporate balance sheets, with Strive purchasing 1,800 BTC valued at approximately $143 million while Strategy accumulated an additional 4,603 BTC.
Between Aug. 24 and Aug. 28, Strive's acquisitions pushed its total reserves to 23,156 BTC, positioning the firm as the fifth-largest publicly listed corporate Bitcoin holder worldwide. The purchases averaged $79,431 per BTC when accounting for fees and associated expenses, following the previous week's purchase of 1,110 BTC at an average cost of $73,409.
Strategy, by comparison, returned to accumulation mode by acquiring 4,603 BTC at an average cost of $80,318, pushing its total holdings beyond 845,000 BTC after executing four separate sales since May.
These acquisitions aligned with a wider digital asset market rebound that commenced Aug. 19, following the US Treasury's announcement regarding plans to double specific long-term bond buyback programs.
Coalition of 21 financial giants targets 2027 launch for G7 stablecoin
Twenty-one major financial institutions, featuring Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Citi among their ranks, are planning to create a new entity dedicated to developing and distributing stablecoins, representing another indication of traditional finance's migration toward digital currencies as regulatory clarity emerges.
The consortium aims to introduce a US dollar-backed stablecoin during the first half of 2027 before broadening into additional G7 currencies, with a euro-denominated version following next. The digital currency will serve wholesale, institutional and retail sectors for international payment transfers and digital asset settlement operations.
This initiative expands upon a project unveiled last October involving 10 banking institutions investigating 1:1 reserve-backed digital money operating on public blockchain networks. The alliance now encompasses participants from North America, Europe, East Asia, the Middle East and Africa, with commitments to adhere to both the US GENIUS Act and the European Union's MiCA regulatory framework.
Bitmine approaches 5% Ether ownership threshold after 65 weeks of purchases
Bitmine has maintained its Ether acquisition campaign for 65 straight weeks, purchasing 53,501 ETH during the past week as the broader cryptocurrency market recovery increased the valuation of its digital asset reserves.
This most recent acquisition elevated Bitmain's total holdings beyond 5.9 million ETH, worth approximately $14.8 billion calculated using an Ether price of $2,511 as of Sunday. The firm now controls 4.9% of Ethereum's total circulating supply of 120.7 million tokens, approaching its publicly stated target of 5% ownership.
According to Bitmine chairman Tom Lee, Ether, Bitcoin and Solana have delivered the three strongest performances among major assets since June 30, with ETH posting leading returns.
We believe this sets the stage for institutions to add to their crypto holdings given the substantial outperformance versus other macro assets.

Notwithstanding this aggressive accumulation strategy, Bitmine currently holds approximately $5.1 billion in unrealized losses across its Ether position, based on DropsTab data, reflecting continuous purchasing throughout the prolonged downturn that started in late 2022.
