BTC Long Positions Face $280M Wipeout as Bitcoin Slides Below $84,000
Bitcoin's upward trajectory stalls as prices retreat beneath the $84,000 threshold, triggering approximately $300 million in long position liquidations within a four-hour window.

Bitcoin (BTC) encountered resistance in the vicinity of $87,000 during Wednesday's trading session as blockchain analytics revealed insufficient spot market purchasing activity.
Key points:
- Bitcoin experienced a downward correction that pushed prices beneath the $84,000 threshold coinciding with Wednesday's Wall Street trading session commencement, triggering $280 million worth of long position liquidations across a four-hour timespan.
- Technical assessment identified the $82,000 level as crucial support that must hold in the scenario of additional price deterioration.
- Bitcoin's aggregate spot market demand continued to register negative values when measured across a 30-day rolling timeframe
BTC price retreats toward $84,000 mark, approaching weekly low point
Information sourced from TradingView documented a secondary effort to surge past the $87,000 barrier prior to BTC/USD descending to regional lows beneath $84,000 as Wall Street trading commenced.
These price points established the top and bottom parameters of a tight intraday trading corridor. Available liquidity intensified on either side of current market prices as market participants worked to trigger a departure from the horizontal trading pattern. Information compiled by CoinGlass calculated liquidation events during the four-hour window preceding publication at $280 million.
Providing commentary on present market conditions, trading specialist and market analyst Rekt Capital identified $82,000 as a critical threshold for bullish investors to defend should lower timeframe price structure experience a breakdown.
"For bullish continuation and to avoid reverting back into the $60k-$80k Range, Bitcoin would need to stay above or at minimum successfully retest ~$82k on any future dip," he wrote in a post on X.
As previously covered by Cointelegraph, the existing price range carries significance for particular investor categories. The United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) maintain their collective cost basis at marginally under $86,000.
In prior analysis, market observers emphasized $90,000 as the probable subsequent zone where BTC/USD will undergo consolidation attributed to the heightened probability of profit-securing activities by market participants.
Spot market demand demonstrates only marginal enhancement
In spite of accumulating more than 35% in gains since the week commencing Aug. 17, Bitcoin continues to grapple with persistent challenges in generating spot-market purchasing interest.
Within its most recent analytical assessment, blockchain analytics service CryptoQuant maintained that buying activity remained predominantly concentrated within derivatives trading venues.
"The negative value of $BTC spot demand has narrowed slightly, while futures demand continues to increase. Total demand is also showing a slight recovery compared to the previous day," it reported in a blog post on the day.
A corresponding graphical representation demonstrated that cumulative 30-day apparent spot demand registered -180,000 BTC as of Tuesday. Negative readings indicate supply volumes exceeding demand quantities throughout the 30-day observation window.
"Although total demand remains in negative territory, the trend is shifting toward the positive. If the current momentum persists, spot demand will also flip to positive. That moment will mark the beginning of a more significant rally," CryptoQuant added.
