Report reveals stablecoin transfers slash costs by 84% versus conventional remittance methods

New analysis from Borderless.xyz reveals substantial cost reductions for international business transactions, with stablecoin-based payments processing significantly quicker than conventional bank wire systems.

Digital dollar-based remittances persistently deliver significant cost advantages compared to conventional money transfer methods, especially within developing economies, further validating one of the most compelling applications for stablecoins as transaction volumes continue their upward trajectory.

Based on fresh data from the third quarter published by Borderless.xyz, a payment network utilizing stablecoins, the cost to transfer $200 via stablecoin-powered payment infrastructure carries a median fee of 1%, equivalent to $2, when contrasted with the 6.36%, or $12.72, charged by conventional remittance services, according to statistics compiled by the World Bank.

This disparity positions stablecoin-powered remittances at approximately 84% more affordable, though it should be noted that the analysis compares Borderless's third-quarter 2026 rates against World Bank statistics from the corresponding quarter in 2025.

The cost advantages prove equally impressive throughout developing market regions. Within Sub-Saharan Africa, remittances funded by stablecoins carry a 2.9% fee, in stark contrast to the 8.46% commanded by traditional transfer mechanisms. For Latin America, the corresponding figures stand at 1.25% versus 5.64%.

Commercial transactions conducted via stablecoins deliver similarly dramatic cost efficiencies, the report indicates. Transferring $10,000 to the eurozone using stablecoin-funded channels costs merely $26 when utilizing the most economical service provider, versus $52 when using the median provider across all payment corridors.

In contrast, executing a conventional international wire transfer through banking channels requires between $135 and $150 for an identical transaction amount, a figure that encompasses transfer charges and incorporates an estimated 1% foreign-exchange markup.

Stablecoin payouts settle in minutes, but reliability varies

In addition to the cost benefits, the analysis from Borderless demonstrates that payments funded through stablecoins can arrive in recipients' domestic banking accounts within mere minutes, though timing depends significantly on which payment infrastructure is employed.

Within Brazil, disbursements processed via the PIX network achieved a median settlement duration of two minutes throughout the third quarter, whereas Mexico's SPEI infrastructure required three minutes. Colombia's PSE payment system similarly registered a median completion time of two minutes.

When measured against traditional alternatives, SWIFT wire transfers generally settled by the following business day, though the slowest 10% of transactions required up to three business days to complete.

Nevertheless, the success rates for payment completion showed substantial variation across different systems. Mexico's SPEI infrastructure successfully finalized 98.6% of disbursements, with Brazil's PIX achieving 97.8%. Colombia's PSE network managed a 79% completion rate, whereas Costa Rica's SINPE system recorded a success rate of only 73%.

These results emerge at a time when transaction activity involving stablecoins maintains its growth trajectory. Standard Chartered has recently emphasized increasing transaction volumes even as overall stablecoin market capitalization has experienced relatively stagnant growth throughout the current year. The financial institution anticipates the market will expand to $2 trillion by 2030, a timeline that represents a two-year delay from its prior projection.
