Block integrates Bitcoin Lightning Network into x402 protocol for AI agent transactions

In a move supporting agentic AI commerce, Block has joined tech giants Google, Microsoft, AWS, and crypto leaders like Coinbase in supporting x402, an open standard for AI-driven payments.

The company has become a member of the x402 Foundation while simultaneously integrating Bitcoin Lightning Network capabilities into the payment protocol, marking a significant expansion of its commitment to facilitating payments between AI agents.

In an announcement made Thursday, Block highlighted that the Lightning Network's characteristics make it particularly well-suited for the type of low-cost, high-volume transaction processing that will form the backbone of agentic commerce systems.

The x402 protocol serves as an open payment standard designed to allow AI agents and web services to independently handle payments for API access, data and digital services without human intervention.

With this partnership, Block is now aligned with major technology corporations such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, as well as cryptocurrency industry players including Coinbase and the Solana Foundation, all of which have thrown their support behind the x402 Foundation, an organization that was established in April under the auspices of the Linux Foundation.

This latest development represents a continuation of Block's involvement in the Universal Commerce Protocol, an initiative designed to facilitate AI-driven commerce capabilities for small businesses, as outlined in the company's announcement.
