Sora AI Video Platform Discontinued by OpenAI After Half-Year Run

After operating for only six months, OpenAI has decided to discontinue its Sora video generation platform, with company leadership under Sam Altman informing employees about a strategic pivot toward long-term initiatives including robotics development.

Following a brief six-month operational period, OpenAI has revealed plans to terminate its video creation platform Sora, with reports indicating that CEO Sam Altman has informed employees about the discontinuation of the company's entire suite of video-related products.

"We're saying goodbye to the Sora app," Sora posted to X on Tuesday. "We know this news is disappointing. We'll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."

Launching in September to considerable excitement and attention, Sora represented the ChatGPT creator's attempt to establish a presence in the short-form video content space that has gained massive popularity on platforms like TikTok and Meta's Instagram.

Despite the initial enthusiasm, the application encountered significant criticism surrounding fears that it could contribute to the growing problem of convincing deepfakes. Following pressure from high-profile public figures, OpenAI took action against certain deepfakes that were created using its platform.

Products using video models on the chopping block

According to a Tuesday report from The Wall Street Journal, Altman informed company personnel that OpenAI would be discontinuing products powered by video models, which encompasses both the developer edition of Sora as well as video generation capabilities integrated into the company's generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.

During the same communication, Altman indicated that team members working on Sora would be redirected toward longer-term strategic initiatives such as robotics development, as part of a broader organizational realignment to emphasize productivity solutions designed for both enterprise clients and individual consumers.

The platform debuted last year with text-to-video generation functionality and achieved remarkable initial traction, accumulating 1 million downloads within its first five days of availability. According to estimates from data analytics company Sensor Tower, Sora recorded approximately 600,000 downloads during the previous month alone.

Disney deal not moving forward

The Walt Disney Co. entered into a three-year licensing partnership in December to serve as Sora's inaugural major content collaborator, providing users with the ability to access over 200 characters from beloved franchises such as Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars.

In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, a Disney spokeswoman confirmed that the partnership agreement, which also encompassed a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, will not proceed as originally planned.

Cointelegraph contacted OpenAI and Disney for comment.

The artificial intelligence sector has experienced tremendous speculation and enthusiasm. Industry analysts project the market will exceed $4.8 trillion in value by 2033, while forecasts suggest it will impact 40% of jobs and establish itself as a leading frontier technology.
