Crypto fund founder Joe McCann detained in Zanzibar following fiancée Ashly Robinson's death

Authorities in Zanzibar are detaining Asymmetric's founder Joe McCann for interrogation following the hospital death of his fiancée, Ashly Robinson.

Authorities in Zanzibar are currently detaining Joe McCann, a cryptocurrency trader who founded the crypto fund Asymmetric, for interrogation following the death of his fiancée during their vacation together.

The fiancée of McCann, 31-year-old Ashly Robinson, passed away in a hospital facility on April 9 following her discovery by hotel employees at the lodging establishment where both were staying one day prior, according to a Thursday report by NBC News, which referenced an official statement from Tanzanian law enforcement.

Authorities have classified Robinson's death as a suicide but have confirmed they continue to interrogate McCann. According to CBS News reporting, law enforcement officials are retaining McCann's passport pending the completion of autopsy findings.

According to police statements, hotel employees informed authorities that the couple experienced a "misunderstanding" and had been placed in separate accommodations, resulting in McCann's relocation to another room.

According to reports, a member of the hotel staff subsequently discovered Robinson in an unresponsive state within her room with a belt positioned around her neck and notified hotel management, following which she was transported to a medical facility.

The account provided by authorities has been challenged by Robinson's family members, with her sister, Alyssa Endres, stating to NBC that "none of this makes sense" and emphasizing that Robinson was in good spirits following her birthday celebration and engagement to McCann, events that occurred mere days prior to her death.

Asymmetric, a crypto venture and hedge fund, was established by McCann, and the organization modified its trading approach in July following criticism from investors regarding poor performance during an extended phase of cryptocurrency market turbulence.

According to reports, a proposed merger deal that would have taken a Solana (SOL) treasury company public, with McCann serving as its leader, was abandoned in August for undisclosed reasons. The cancellation occurred mere weeks following McCann's announcement that his fund had experienced an 80% loss up to that point in the year.

Attempts to contact McCann for comment were unsuccessful.
