Token Valuations Set to Surge as Blockchain Networks Tie Revenue Streams to Digital Assets: Bitwise Investment Chief

Matt Hougan from Bitwise anticipates that revenue-sharing mechanisms will become widespread throughout decentralized finance platforms and foundational blockchain networks within the upcoming 12 to 24 months.

Digital asset valuations stand to expand by a factor of two or more as blockchain protocols progressively implement revenue to support token repurchase programs and supply reduction initiatives, according to Matt Hougan, who serves as Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise.

Speaking on Wednesday, Hougan articulated that the cryptocurrency sector beyond Bitcoin is transitioning into a market driven by revenue generation, where network transaction volumes directly influence the underlying value of native tokens. According to his analysis, market participants have yet to incorporate this fundamental shift into current pricing models, creating valuation gaps for certain digital assets.

Hougan highlighted several protocols including Hyperliquid, Uniswap, Aave, Pump.fun and Lighter, which leverage transaction fees to execute token buyback programs or permanently eliminate tokens from active circulation. His forecast suggests that both decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and layer-1 blockchain networks will implement comparable revenue-capture frameworks within the next 12 to 24 months.

The development of more robust connections between protocol-generated revenue and token valuation could provide market participants with traditional metrics for asset assessment, Hougan noted, while acknowledging that token owners don't possess the same legal entitlements to cash flows that traditional shareholders enjoy and that tokenomics frameworks established by communities remain subject to modification.

DeFi protocols turn fees into token demand

Hyperliquid, the decentralized trading platform that produced revenue exceeding $800 million throughout the previous year, allocates approximately 99% of these earnings toward purchasing and permanently destroying HYPE tokens. On Aug. 6, Hyperliquid disclosed $169 million in second-quarter revenue and channeled $141 million into HYPE token repurchase operations.

Uniswap similarly established a connection between revenue generation and its native token following the "UNIfication" restructuring that authorized the implementation of protocol fees to finance UNI token burns on Dec. 22, 2025. Through this framework, accumulated fees become claimable through the process of burning UNI tokens, creating a direct relationship between protocol usage and decreases in the token's circulating supply.

In a parallel development, Aave DAO's token repurchase initiative acquired more than 205,000 AAVE tokens throughout its initial 10 months of operation. On June 25, Stani Kulechov, the founder of Aave, revealed that the development team was engineering an automated, rule-based buyback system that would operate without discretionary intervention.

100% of Aave Protocol and GHO revenue goes to the $AAVE token. This was established in the Aave Will Win proposal.

Hougan credited this transformation to an increasingly accommodating regulatory landscape in the United States following a prolonged period during which blockchain projects steered clear of revenue-distribution features due to apprehensions regarding securities regulations. On Aug. 5, he stated that evolving regulatory guidance might enable the cryptocurrency industry to sustain its growth trajectory even in the absence of the CLARITY Act being enacted into law.
