Tech Giant Apple Hit with Legal Action Over Fraudulent Bitcoin App Resulting in $1.8M Losses

A legal complaint filed by three individuals claims a counterfeit Sparrow Wallet application available through Apple's App Store resulted in the theft of their Bitcoin assets, with combined damages exceeding $1.8 million.

The technology giant Apple finds itself at the center of legal proceedings initiated by three individuals who claim they suffered combined financial damages of $1.8 million following their download of a counterfeit Bitcoin wallet application from the company's App Store platform.

Legal documents submitted on Friday to the US District Court for the Northern District of California claim that Apple neglected its responsibility to properly vet and oversee applications despite marketing the App Store as a secure and trustworthy platform for consumers, as reported in court documents reviewed by MacRumors.

The individuals bringing the lawsuit, identified as James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis and Jalen Delgado, claim they input their seed phrases into the illegitimate application, which enabled fraudsters to steal their Bitcoin holdings. The three parties sustained financial losses of approximately $875,000, $840,000 and $120,000, in that order, throughout 2025, as detailed in the legal filing.

The legitimate Sparrow Wallet software is compatible with Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. Craig Raw, the application's creator, has previously voiced concerns regarding Apple's handling of counterfeit versions of his app that have appeared within the App Store. There is no authorized iOS version of the wallet application.

In a statement provided to MacRumors, Apple confirmed it has deleted applications that were impersonating Sparrow Wallet and disabled the developer accounts associated with those fraudulent apps. The corporation stated that both developers and users have the ability to flag apps that breach its established guidelines, further noting that it enforces action against applications that fail to adhere to App Store regulations.
