Q3 Market Data Signals Emerging 'Crypto Spring,' Bitwise's Hougan Reports
Matt Hougan, CIO at Bitwise, points to Q3's cryptocurrency surge, fresh capital flows into Bitcoin ETFs, and expanding tokenized asset markets as indicators of an emerging 'crypto spring' period.

According to Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, the third quarter may represent "one of the best quarters in crypto's history," with the executive highlighting a dramatic recovery in digital asset valuations and expanding onchain market activity as evidence of an emerging "crypto spring."
Bitwise's quarterly market analysis released on Thursday revealed that its large-cap cryptocurrency index registered a 46.4% increase for the quarter, accompanied by $6 billion in fresh capital entering US spot Bitcoin ETF products, which pushed year-to-date net inflows back to positive levels.
The expansion went well beyond simple cryptocurrency price appreciation. Tokenized equity values climbed 65.5% to approach $3.2 billion, while open interest in decentralized perpetual futures contracts reached an unprecedented high near $26 billion, with an increasing portion connected to equities, commodities, currency pairs and pre-IPO securities.
Page after page after page, it's all the same: The most recent part of the chart is turning sharply upwards. That's exactly what you want to see if you're looking for the start of a crypto spring.

Market observers in the cryptocurrency space have been discussing whether the market downturn has truly concluded. In September, CryptoQuant indicated that both technical and onchain metrics validated a fresh Bitcoin bull market, whereas Bitget's chief analyst Ryan Lee informed Cointelegraph that additional indicators would be necessary to validate a cycle low. Hougan referenced ETF capital flows and onchain metrics as further evidence of a potential market recovery.
10 large-cap crypto gain double digits
Bitcoin (BTC) registered a 42.3% increase throughout Q3, whereas Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) climbed 69.1% and 59.2%, respectively, per Bitwise's data.
Every single constituent among the 10 assets in the company's large-cap cryptocurrency index delivered double-digit percentage gains for the quarter, with Chainlink (LINK) emerging as the top performer after surging 97.6%.
Three months ago, crypto was in the depths of despair. Prices, onchain activity, ETF flows—everything was down.

The recovery did not, however, reach every sector of the digital asset industry.
Equity shares of Bitcoin mining companies Riot Platforms and Hut 8 declined 26.4% and 25.4%, respectively, throughout the third quarter, whereas Galaxy Digital experienced a 16.8% decrease, based on Bitwise's findings.
The total count of publicly traded corporations maintaining Bitcoin holdings decreased nearly 6% to 173 during the quarter, although their aggregate holdings expanded 0.5%, while the count of publicly traded firms holding Ether declined to 35 from 40, despite their collective holdings showing growth.
In the meantime, Bitwise's large-cap cryptocurrency index continued to show a 6.2% decline for the year ending in September, notwithstanding its robust quarterly performance.
Upcoming catalysts
Turning attention forward, Bitwise indicated expectations that the SEC's innovation exemption will attract billions in additional tokenized assets onto blockchain networks.
We believe Q4 moves tokenization from pilots to production. We expect the exemption will pull billions more of tokenized assets onto blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, NEAR, and others.

At the same time, the firm anticipates the expanding perpetual futures marketplace will gain momentum following more than $6 trillion in trading volume year-to-date across platforms including Hyperliquid and Lighter, representing a 42% increase compared to the corresponding timeframe in the previous year.
With regulatory support expected this quarter, we project the growing perp market to accelerate as US investors start to arrive.
