AmericanFortress unveils quantum-resistant wallet security solution that eliminates need for fund transfers

A newly proposed cryptographic framework seeks to shield current Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana wallet infrastructure from emerging quantum computing threats while allowing users to maintain their existing wallet addresses and fund locations.

AmericanFortress, a company specializing in blockchain security, has introduced a cryptographic framework that it claims can safeguard current cryptocurrency wallets against potential quantum computing threats without necessitating fund transfers, key rotation or modifications to existing wallet addresses.

In contrast to the majority of post-quantum security proposals currently being considered, AmericanFortress stated that its framework enables current wallet addresses to stay unmodified while incorporating post-quantum defensive measures.

The firm released its proposal through a technical paper on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, characterizing the framework as being compatible with seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets deployed throughout Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL) and additional blockchain networks that depend on elliptic curve cryptography. The publication has not undergone peer review at this time.

Based on the technical paper, the framework employs zero-knowledge proofs generated from a wallet's initial seed phrase rather than substituting the elliptic curve cryptography that underpins current wallets. According to AmericanFortress, participating network nodes would authenticate these proofs while users maintain the ability to sign transactions using their current keys.

The company also referenced a recent analysis from Bloomberg that projects up to $470 billion worth of Bitcoin could be at risk from quantum computing attacks should sufficiently advanced quantum computers emerge.

Companies pursue different paths to post-quantum wallet security

AmericanFortress is far from the sole organization working on post-quantum security solutions for cryptocurrency wallets. Earlier this week, Freedom Factory introduced PQ1, which the company characterizes as a post-quantum hardware wallet engineered for Ethereum and additional Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain networks.

In contrast to AmericanFortress' approach based on software, PQ1 relies on post-quantum cryptographic signatures created on specialized hardware. Freedom Factory indicates that the wallet employs SPHINCS+C10 signatures along with ERC-4337 smart accounts to protect transactions from future quantum computing threats.

Development teams have progressively concentrated their efforts on post-quantum cryptography due to concerns that sufficiently advanced quantum computers may ultimately compromise the elliptic-curve cryptography employed to protect Bitcoin, Ethereum and numerous other blockchain networks. While such powerful computers remain unavailable at present, multiple blockchain initiatives have already commenced investigating migration strategies.

Throughout recent months, a consortium spearheaded by Strategy committed $15 million toward funding Bitcoin quantum security research initiatives, the Ethereum Foundation released a proposal detailing account migration to quantum-resistant cryptographic systems, and Algorand revealed intentions to deploy quantum-resistant account functionality by 2027.
