Vitalik Buterin Confirms Ethereum Smart Accounts Set to Launch 'Within 12 Months'

The Hegota fork will introduce account abstraction to Ethereum, bringing smart accounts, versatile gas payment options, and enhanced privacy features in less than a year.

The highly anticipated feature of account abstraction, also known as smart accounts, is set to arrive with Ethereum's Hegota upgrade "within a year," according to a Saturday announcement from Vitalik Buterin.

"We have been talking about account abstraction ever since early 2016," stated the co-founder of Ethereum during the weekend.

Buterin further noted that today, "we finally have EIP-8141, an omnibus that wraps up and solves every remaining problem that AA [account abstraction] was intended to address (plus more)," with implementation scheduled for this year.

"Finally, after over a decade of research and refinement of these techniques, this all looks possible to make happen within a year (Hegota fork)."

The fundamental concept is "about as simple as you can get while still being highly general purpose," utilizing "frame transactions," as Buterin described.

Rather than treating a transaction as one single operation, it transforms into a series of "frames" capable of referencing data from one another, where each individual frame can indicate authorization from a sender or entity covering gas fees.

A fundamental tenet of cypherpunk Ethereum

Smart accounts featuring multi-signatures, wallets resistant to quantum computing, and accounts with keys that can be changed function through a validation frame, which verifies the signature and grants approval, then proceeds to an execution frame.

The ability to pay gas fees using non-ETH tokens can be achieved through a "paymaster contract" or a specialized decentralized exchange that delivers Ether (ETH) instantly, without requiring intermediaries, which represents a significant advancement for Ethereum's foundational philosophy, Vitalik emphasized.

"Intermediary minimization is a core principle of non-ugly cypherpunk Ethereum: maximize what you can do even if all the world's infrastructure except the Ethereum chain itself goes down."

According to Buterin, this development holds particular significance for those utilizing privacy protocols, as it enables them to entirely eliminate "public broadcasters" that serve as the "source of massive UX pain" in privacy-focused platforms like Railgun and Tornado Cash, substituting them with a "general-purpose public mempool."

Quantum-resistant Ethereum currently under development

Every Ethereum account, including those already in existence, can be incorporated into this identical framework and acquire the capability to perform batch operations and benefit from transaction sponsorship, Buterin explained.

On Thursday, the Ethereum co-founder published his roadmap for making Ethereum resistant to quantum computing threats, identifying the four primary areas of concern as validator signatures, data storage, user account signatures, and zero-knowledge proofs.

Additionally, Buterin mentioned that he anticipates seeing "progressive decreases" in both slot time and finality time as part of the extended-term scaling roadmap going forward.
