Trump's crypto and AI czar David Sacks concludes 130-day appointment

Following his tenure, David Sacks transitions to heading a White House-created technology advisory council featuring prominent industry figures including Jensen Huang from Nvidia and Mark Zuckerberg from Meta.

Venture capitalist David Sacks, who took on a specialized White House position under US President Donald Trump in 2025, has completed his 130-day stint as the administration's crypto and AI czar, though he will remain influential in policy development through a different capacity.

Speaking to Bloomberg on Thursday, Sacks acknowledged "We've now used up that time," while explaining his ongoing involvement in offering policy guidance across various technology sectors as co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

Since Trump's 2025 appointment, Sacks has maintained a significant presence within the White House, serving as the commander-in-chief's primary technology consultant.

His new position will share commonalities with his former crypto and AI czar responsibilities, explaining that he and fellow council members would "study issues together" prior to delivering formal recommendations to regulatory bodies.

During his time as the crypto and AI czar, Sacks contributed to the President's Working Group on Digital Asset Markets' publication of a comprehensive 166-page report in July, detailing proposed regulatory approaches for the cryptocurrency sector.

Most recently, on March 20, Sacks assisted the Trump administration in unveiling an AI framework designed to promote AI innovation and workforce advancement while safeguarding children and intellectual property protections.

Sacks was instrumental in advancing the stablecoin-centered GENIUS Act through passage in July and remains committed to advocating for crypto market structure legislation, including the CLARITY Act.

According to Fox Business, citing a senior adviser to the president, Sacks will maintain his responsibilities as AI and crypto czar alongside expanding his scope of influence.

"David will always be his crypto and AI czar, but to the admin more broadly, this new role will allow him to advise on a broader range of critical tech issues," the adviser stated.

PCAST may be more AI-focused than crypto

The composition of PCAST includes 13 technology industry leaders representing diverse sectors including AI, crypto, health care and quantum computing.

Joining Sacks on the council are notable figures such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, AMD's Lisa Su, Oracle's Larry Ellison, Andreessen "a16z" Horowitz's Marc Andreessen and Dell Technologies' Michael Dell.

Fred Ehrsam stands as the sole crypto-native participant, having co-founded Coinbase alongside CEO Brian Armstrong in 2012 before establishing crypto-focused VC firm Paradigm in 2018.

According to Sacks, a key priority for PCAST involves harmonizing America's AI strategy across federal and state government levels:

"The problem that we're seeing right now is that you've got 50 different states regulating this in 50 different ways, and it's creating a patchwork of regulation that's difficult for innovators to comply with."

"So what the president has called for is one rulebook," he continued.
