Sweeping Bitcoin Security Review Uncovers Nearly 5,000 Potential Vulnerabilities
In a span of just over 24 hours, a team of volunteer security researchers has identified close to 5,000 possible security flaws spanning 390 different Bitcoin-related projects.
A collective of merely 16 volunteer security researchers working on Bitcoin reported the discovery of close to 5,000 potential security concerns following a swift AI-powered examination of various projects within the broader Bitcoin ecosystem.
The volunteer-driven initiative known as Bitcoin Red Team features participants such as AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton and Bitcoin developer Calle, alongside other contributors, and has been leveraging artificial intelligence tools combined with manual human analysis to examine open-source repositories related to Bitcoin for security weaknesses.
"We're averaging on the order of 1 critical exploit per hour per person," said Calle in a post to X on Wednesday.
The commencement of this Bitcoin-focused security assessment initiative arrives mere days following the security breach involving the Coldcard hardware wallet, an incident that has resulted in the theft of more than $100 million worth of Bitcoin.
According to Calle, in the first 29.8 hours of its operation, its team has found 4,962 potential issues across 390 projects. As many as 720 of them are considered high- or critical-level issues. So far, 21.4% of findings have been able to be reproduced.
