Senators Question Trump's Commitment to Memecoin Holder Event Amid Schedule Clash

A group of senators are demanding clarity on whether the president will actually attend a Florida luncheon for memecoin investors or is simply using the promise to drive transaction revenues.

A trio of United States senators have reportedly reached out to an organizer involved with President Donald Trump's memecoin project, questioning whether the commander-in-chief plans to use his potential presence at an upcoming luncheon as bait for attendees, particularly since he has already committed to appearing at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on the identical date.

Based on a Politico report published Thursday, lawmakers Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, and Adam Schiff dispatched correspondence to Bill Zanker, the figure responsible for launching the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin. The senators raised concerns about Trump potentially using his promised appearance at the luncheon gathering set for April 25, which was publicly announced by the memecoin initiative during March.

"[O]rganizers are promoting a conference by dangling access to President Trump to potential attendees (and in doing so, are encouraging purchases of his meme coin that will generate transaction fees for the President and his family) on a day he may not actually be able to attend,"

Letter to Zanker, according to Politico

The memecoin gathering is slated to take place at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on April 25, which creates a conflict as the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner is simultaneously scheduled in Washington, DC on that same date. The president publicly stated on March 2 that he intended to participate in the correspondents' dinner for the first time, having avoided the event throughout his initial presidential term. Prior to assuming office this term, Trump made appearances at numerous cryptocurrency-focused gatherings, ranging from the Bitcoin 2024 conference to the inaugural dinner held for TRUMP memecoin holders in May 2025.

The terms and conditions published by the organization managing the memecoin project indicate that Trump "may not be able to attend" the scheduled April 25 gathering, and the event is subject to cancellation without specific cause. Cointelegraph made contact with the White House seeking commentary regarding the president's itinerary and associated travel expenses, though an immediate reply was not forthcoming.

US crypto market structure discussions are still underway

While senators express apprehensions regarding possible conflicts of interest and what they characterize as "selling access" to presidential influence, members of Congress and cryptocurrency sector representatives have not yet publicly revealed a negotiated settlement that would enable a digital asset market structure proposal to move forward through Congress and receive presidential signature.

During July 2025, the House of Representatives successfully passed the CLARITY Act, legislative text designed to create a regulatory market structure framework governing cryptocurrencies throughout the United States. Following its passage to the Senate, the upper chamber's agriculture committee moved the legislation forward in January, though the banking committee chose to postpone a markup session indefinitely due to unresolved issues surrounding tokenized equities, stablecoin yield provisions, and ethical considerations.

At the time of publication on Thursday, the Senate Banking Committee had yet to place a markup session on its calendar for the legislation, a procedural step required to resolve securities law questions before the bill could potentially proceed to a full floor vote. The White House issued an official statement on Wednesday asserting that prohibiting stablecoin yield within the proposed bill "would do very little to protect bank lending" as a response to expressed worries from both traditional banking institutions and the cryptocurrency sector.
