Reports: Amazon CEO's Alert Sparked Federal Action Against Anthropic AI Systems
Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, allegedly alerted federal authorities regarding Anthropic's Fable 5 model, sparking governmental intervention due to cybersecurity concerns.

Reports indicate that the Trump administration's move to restrict international access to Anthropic's cutting-edge AI models stemmed from communications initiated by Amazon's chief executive, Andy Jassy.
A Wall Street Journal report reveals that Jassy reached out to high-ranking government officials this past Thursday following a discovery by Amazon's research team. The researchers had identified a method to manipulate Anthropic's Fable 5 model into providing data that could potentially facilitate cyber warfare operations.
This communication, combined with similar alerts from no fewer than five additional companies, sparked an urgent effort inside the White House to assess the security implications and establish contact with Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive. Amodei is said to have resisted the administration's concerns and declined voluntary requests to withdraw the model from public availability.
"In reaction, the Admin issued the export control. The Admin did this reluctantly. It's been very surprised that Anthropic hasn't wanted to cooperate with a reasonable safety request (ie fixing the jailbreak issue)."

This incident provides crucial insight into the circumstances that resulted in the United States government directive compelling Anthropic to withdraw its latest model from public availability Friday evening. Current estimates place Anthropic Claude's monthly active user base at approximately 18,900.
Anthropic released a statement via blog post on Friday asserting its belief that the government directive stemmed from misconceptions regarding the severity of a "non-universal jailbreak," information that originated from an unidentified report.
Amazon has not provided confirmation regarding whether discussions with government authorities about Anthropic's models took place.
"As a leading cloud provider that serves a large number of private and public sector customers, it's not uncommon for governments to seek our counsel on potential security risks. When they occur, we don't share the details of these discussions."

Anthropic has stated that efforts are underway to reinstate access for its user base.
"The Admin's hope now is that Anthropic remediates the safety issue," Sacks said, which would see the export control lifted, and Fable goes back into general release.
"The Admin wants all of this to happen as soon as possible."
AI tokens surge after Anthropic crackdown
This incident has additionally illustrated the federal government's capacity to rapidly terminate access to AI models based in the United States upon directive, resulting in significant gains for decentralized AI cryptocurrency tokens throughout Friday and Saturday trading periods.
Bittensor's native cryptocurrency, part of a decentralized AI protocol enabling individuals to construct and commercialize artificial intelligence models—often dubbed "the Bitcoin of AI"—experienced a 23.9% price increase during the previous 24-hour period.
