Quantum Computing Threatens Cryptocurrency Security, EU Regulators Caution

European Union authorities raise concerns about quantum technology's potential to compromise blockchain cryptography while Bitcoin developers consider migration strategies and Ethereum sets 2029 deadline.

On Wednesday, financial regulators from the European Union issued a warning regarding how developments in quantum computing technology might pose a risk to the cryptographic foundations that protect blockchain networks.

A joint risk assessment released by the European Banking Authority, the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, and the European Securities and Markets Authority highlighted that quantum computing capabilities could compromise the security mechanisms that protect transactions, communications channels, and database systems.

This cautionary statement comes after Google Quantum AI released a more comprehensive analysis. In March, the company's research team calculated that cracking the cryptographic protections employed by numerous cryptocurrencies might need approximately 20 times fewer physical qubits than previously projected. The qubit serves as the fundamental computing unit in quantum systems.

Currently, no computing machine with the capability to execute such an attack has been developed.

The primary worry for individuals holding cryptocurrency is the possibility that an advanced quantum computer in the future might be able to extract a private key from a publicly visible key and leverage it to validate transactions.

In February, Bitcoin developer Jameson Lopp collaborated with five other co-developers to introduce a proposal suggesting the elimination of the network's existing signatures and implementing limitations on how funds that haven't been migrated could be utilized five years following the proposal's implementation. This proposal remains unadopted.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation has established a goal to ensure Ethereum achieves resistance against quantum-based attacks throughout its execution layer, consensus layer, and data layer by December 2029.
