Presidential signature to appear on American currency for first time since nation's founding

In an unprecedented move, the Treasury Department has revealed that President Donald Trump's signature will appear on American paper money, with the $100 note expected to debut this change in June.

President Donald Trump is poised to make history as the first commander-in-chief currently in office to have his personal signature featured on American paper money.

During a Thursday announcement, the Treasury Department of the United States revealed that this decision coincides with the celebration of America's 250th anniversary. The new currency will feature the signatures of both Trump and Scott Bessent, who serves as Treasury Secretary.

There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.

Scott Bessent, Treasury Secretary

Historically, American paper money has featured the signatures of the nation's treasurer along with the Treasury secretary. This upcoming change represents an unprecedented departure from tradition, as no sitting president has ever had their signature appear on the nation's currency.

Based on reporting from Reuters published Thursday, the initial printing of $100 notes bearing the signatures of Trump and Bessent is scheduled for June, while additional denominations will follow in subsequent months.

Beyond currency, Trump's identity and image have been incorporated into various forms including cryptocurrencies, notable national monuments and special commemorative coins.

In addition to the Treasury Department's initiative to feature Trump's signature on paper money, there are also proposals for $1 coins displaying the president's portrait that may be released into circulation in conjunction with the nation's 250th birthday celebration.

Toward the end of 2025, the US Mint unveiled three different design proposals that feature Trump's likeness along with the phrase "In God We Trust."

Beyond currency matters, Trump has also been involved in the renaming of significant American cultural institutions, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The Kennedy Center's board, which is said to be predominantly composed of individuals appointed by Trump, cast their votes in late December to rebrand the institution as the "Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts."

However, this action has sparked resistance, with members of Congress contending that such a name change violates the law when enacted without proper Congressional approval.

Within the cryptocurrency sphere, Trump has an associated memecoin bearing his name, and has additionally launched several NFT projects, including the Trump Digital Trading Cards collection.
