Petrobras Leverages Cardano Blockchain for Monitoring Renewable Aviation Fuel and Diesel
The Brazilian oil corporation Petrobras has created a pair of blockchain-based solutions utilizing Cardano technology to monitor sustainability credentials related to renewable diesel and aviation fuel through a continuous research partnership.

Petrobras, the state-owned oil corporation of Brazil, has created two blockchain-powered solutions leveraging the Cardano network to monitor sustainability information related to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the company's Diesel R renewable fuel product.
Based on an announcement released Wednesday by the Cardano Foundation, the initial solution, built in partnership with Ledger Labs at PUC-Rio, transforms environmental characteristics linked to SAF into digital tokens that are structured to ensure each claim can only be utilized once.
This solution employs a Book-and-Claim framework, which enables the separation of environmental benefits from the actual physical fuel, permitting assignment to a passenger, company or airline regardless of where the SAF is physically consumed.
These digital tokens, called CS-SAF, include metadata that conforms to the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) standards. Individual passengers also have the ability to claim CS-SAF tokens via an application and obtain a certificate connected to their specific journey and its corresponding environmental claim.
The secondary application establishes digital verification points to monitor the production process, transportation logistics and consumption of Diesel R, the renewable diesel fuel product manufactured by Petrobras. According to the Cardano Foundation, this data has the potential to facilitate Scope 3 reporting requirements, which encompass indirect emissions throughout a company's entire value chain.
Both initiatives represent components of a continuing research and development partnership that commenced in 2023 with educational programs on blockchain technology for Petrobras staff members and grew in 2025 to incorporate energy-sector research conducted alongside PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs. The Cardano Foundation has not revealed the fuel quantities encompassed by these solutions or provided a schedule for wider implementation.
Blockchain finds use in sustainable aviation fuel tracking
Energy company Shell has similarly employed blockchain technology to monitor environmental attributes connected to sustainable aviation fuel via Avelia, a Book-and-Claim solution introduced in 2022 that utilizes blockchain for tracking claims and avoiding double counting.
According to a September update from Shell, the Avelia platform had facilitated the introduction of over 84 million gallons of SAF into the worldwide fuel supply system since launching in 2022, generating more than 780,000 tonnes of CO₂e reduction through June 2026.
In more recent developments, Viva Energy of Australia entered into an agreement with NoviqTech in January to explore digital Book-and-Claim frameworks for sustainable aviation fuel, including the potential role of blockchain technology in supporting emissions reporting and monitoring environmental claims.
