Optimism reallocates 546.9M OP tokens to new strategic ecosystem initiative
The Optimism community has greenlit a proposal to redirect 546.9 million OP tokens, originally earmarked for upcoming airdrops, toward a Strategic Ecosystem Fund designed to accelerate network expansion and attract institutional participants.

The governance community of Optimism blockchain has given the green light to a proposal that reallocates 546.9 million OP tokens, which were initially set aside for distributing to users via airdrops, toward initiatives aimed at fostering ecosystem development and attracting institutional participants.
According to data from CoinGecko, OP maintains a market capitalization of approximately $214 million, while its circulating supply stands at around 2.29 billion tokens.
This newly established Strategic Ecosystem Fund is designed to facilitate collaborations with blockchain networks, decentralized protocols and institutional entities, while also providing incentive programs aimed at boosting network activity and liquidity across OP Mainnet and expanding OP Enterprise capabilities.
The governance decision faced resistance from certain delegates who maintained that these tokens had been earmarked for community members and raised concerns about the foundation's methodology for evaluating the fund's return on investment. Those in favor of the reallocation maintained that directing these resources toward securing enterprise partnerships and accelerating growth would yield superior outcomes.
According to Optimism, the project has concluded its airdrop program after completing five distribution rounds that allocated 269.1 million OP tokens, with no further airdrops on the roadmap. The foundation argues that airdrop campaigns were more appropriate during its initial growth phase centered on widespread user onboarding, rather than its present strategy emphasizing institutional engagement.
As an Ethereum (ETH) layer-2 scaling solution, Optimism operates OP Mainnet and maintains the OP Stack, a modular blockchain development framework that powers multiple networks such as Base, Unichain, Ink from Kraken, and Sony's Soneium platform. The project reports that over 30 blockchain networks built on OP Stack technology are actively generating revenue for the Optimism ecosystem.
OP experiences 11% surge while still 93% down from peak valuation
On Thursday, OP was trading at approximately $0.09, posting gains of roughly 11% during the preceding 24-hour period as part of a wider cryptocurrency market upswing. However, even with this recent recovery, the token continues to trade more than 93% beneath its historical peak value.
Based on OP's present market price, the reallocation of 546.9 million tokens represents a value of approximately $50 million, accounting for close to one-quarter of the token's total market capitalization of roughly $211 million.
Cointelegraph previously reported in July that the blockchain network had entered into a memorandum of understanding with Viva Republica, the company behind South Korean mobile payment application Toss, to conduct a three-month proof-of-concept initiative testing stablecoin infrastructure denominated in Korean won for institutional payment systems.
