New Arizona Legislation Enables Recovery of $171K for 35 Cryptocurrency ATM Fraud Victims

The state of Arizona mandates that cryptocurrency kiosks must display anti-fraud alerts, provide transaction receipts, perform wallet verification checks, and impose restrictions on daily transaction amounts.

A cryptocurrency ATM regulation enacted in Arizona has enabled 35 individuals who fell victim to scams to obtain complete reimbursements amounting to $171,332 since the legislation became operative in September 2025, as reported by the state's top law enforcement official.

This past Wednesday, the Office of the Arizona Attorney General announced its role in assisting these victims in securing complete refunds and emphasized the importance of residents promptly reporting transactions involving fraud to ensure they don't miss the legislation's 30-day reporting window.

According to the provisions of House Bill 2387, operators of cryptocurrency kiosks are required to provide full refunds to qualifying new customers for transactions that were induced through fraudulent means, with all related charges included. Those who have been victimized must reach out to the kiosk operator as well as the attorney general or an alternative law enforcement entity within a 30-day period and supply the operator with an official report that confirms they were fraudulently induced into completing the transaction.

The legislation, which became enforceable on Sept. 26, establishes the definition of a new customer as an individual who has utilized services from a particular operator for a period of less than 10 days. The law additionally restricts their daily transaction limit to $2,000, in contrast to the $10,500 limit applicable to established customers.

Kris Mayes, Arizona's Attorney General, encouraged state residents who become victims of cryptocurrency ATM-related scams to reach out to her office without delay, emphasizing that fraudulent transactions need to be reported within the 30-day timeframe to meet the requirements for obtaining a refund.

My office is happy to help any victim of crypto ATM fraud receive a refund they are entitled to under Arizona law.
