New $30B financing could push OpenAI's worth to $1.4 trillion: Sources

The company behind ChatGPT is pursuing an additional $30 billion in capital as it delays its anticipated stock market launch until at least 2027.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm that created ChatGPT, is pursuing a fresh $30 billion funding round that could push its valuation to an astronomical $1.4 trillion, positioning it among the planet's most valuable enterprises prior to any public listing.

According to Bloomberg's Tuesday report, which cited sources with knowledge of the situation, the AI company has begun preliminary conversations regarding this new capital raise, with strong investor appetite fueling the ongoing discussions.

This potential valuation represents an approximately 64% increase compared to the company's $852 billion worth in March, during which it successfully secured $122 billion in financing.

These funding conversations are taking place as the company extends the timeline for its highly anticipated market debut to 2027 at the soonest. Chief Executive Sam Altman stated earlier this month that pursuing a public offering in 2026 would be "ill-advised" given the organization's current emphasis on artificial intelligence safety considerations. The company submitted confidential documentation for an initial public offering to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June.

Regarding safety matters, Altman appeared before the United Nations Security Council earlier this month to discuss the possible dangers associated with progressively more advanced AI technologies.

At the same time, competing firm Anthropic, which developed the Claude AI assistant, is proceeding with intentions to pursue a public listing this year through an IPO that could assign the company a valuation exceeding $2 trillion.
