Marshall Islands Digital Bond Powers First Onchain Repo Transaction by Virtu and Tradeweb

A groundbreaking repo transaction leveraged the USDM1 bond from the Marshall Islands as collateral, executing the complete repo cycle on Canton Network in less than 10 minutes.

An onchain repo transaction utilizing a sovereign digital bond as collateral has been successfully completed by Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb, marking a milestone as the entire transaction achieved settlement on the Canton Network.

The deal employed USDM1, a sovereign bond denominated in US dollars and issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, which maintains a 1:1 backing through short-term US Treasurys. This bond generates coupon payments even during its use as collateral and operates under New York law as a sovereign obligation with full collateralization.

According to both firms, this marked the inaugural repo transaction that merged natively issued sovereign collateral with completely onchain atomic settlement. Carried out between regulated counterparties via Tradeweb's platform, the entire repo and repurchase cycle reached completion in less than 10 minutes.

The deal demonstrates the practical application of tokenized sovereign debt as collateral within an institutional financing transaction, moving beyond its traditional role limited to issuance or trading purposes. However, this represents an early-stage implementation, and whether this approach will gain widespread acceptance throughout institutional repo markets remains uncertain.

According to the release, USDM1 can be accessed through the Tradeweb electronic trading platform, while institutional custody services are delivered by Anchorage Digital, BitGo and tZERO.

Canton Network sees flurry of institutional activity

Canton represents a blockchain network engineered specifically for institutional finance, incorporating privacy and permissioning capabilities tailored to regulated transactions and tokenized assets.

The repo transaction completed on Thursday comes after a July deal in which Tradeweb enabled the real-time transfer of a tokenized US Treasury from Franklin Templeton to Virtu Financial on Canton, with the transaction settling against USDCx.

The network experienced increased activity during August. FalconX and Interstice introduced a cross-chain swap engine that connects Canton with Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain, concurrent with World Liberty Financial's launch of its USD1 stablecoin natively on Canton.

This month also saw Digital Asset and the American Idea Foundation, established by former US House Speaker Paul Ryan, reveal their intentions for a 2027 pilot program that would utilize Canton to distribute state-administered benefits across three US states.
