Linux Foundation gains control of Linea's ZK rollup technology through open-source donation
According to Declan Fox, director on the Linea Consortium board, the contribution provides the technology with an impartial, foundation-managed environment.

The Linea Consortium has become a premier member of Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) and has donated its open-source zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup infrastructure that drives Linea to a newly established code initiative named Lineth.
This donation transfers Linea's fundamental layer-2 infrastructure under the open-source governance structure of LFDT, removing it from the authority of a single entity, according to a Tuesday announcement from Linea Consortium, which frames the action as progress toward decentralization. That said, this donation pertains to the governance of Linea's open-source technical infrastructure and does not automatically mean the Linea network itself becomes decentralized.
Declan Fox, a board director at Linea Consortium, is set to become a member of the LFDT governing board, joining delegates from organizations such as Consensys, Hedera, Kaleido, OpenAssets and Shielded Technologies.
The Linea Consortium operates as a nonprofit entity responsible for steering Linea's ecosystem development, protocol direction and decentralization efforts, whereas LFDT serves as the Linux Foundation's open-source hub for blockchain, distributed ledger, digital identity and associated decentralized technologies.
The Lineth project encompasses Linea's fundamental ZK rollup building blocks, such as its execution layer, consensus mechanisms and proof generation systems, in addition to smart contracts on both L1 and L2. According to Linea, the initiative seeks to broaden its maintainer community, draw in enterprise and institutional participants, and ensure long-term viability independent of any individual corporation.
Cointelegraph contacted Linea Consortium for further details, but had not received a reply by the time of publication.
Open-source move does not decentralize Linea network
This action establishes a foundation-managed environment for the Linea ZK rollup infrastructure where maintainers, contributors and prospective enterprise users can collaborate. Nevertheless, critical elements of the network continue to operate under centralized control, including its sequencer operations, proof generation, upgrade authority and validator engagement.
During the announcement, Fox emphasized one of Ethereum's fundamental value principles: credible neutrality. He stated that becoming part of LFDT and donating Lineth represent "deliberate steps in Linea's progressive decentralization." He further noted that this transition provides the infrastructure supporting the L2 ecosystem with a "neutral home that no single company controls."
Based on Linea's risk disclosure documentation, its Mainnet Beta continues to incorporate centralized elements including the sequencer, proof generator and Security Council, all of which are operated by the development team. The sequencer retains the capability to delay transaction processing and alter transaction ordering.
The L2 analytics platform L2Beat categorizes Linea as a Stage 0 rollup, a designation applied to networks that maintain significant dependence on operators or other centralized trusted parties.
This differentiation emerges during an ongoing Ethereum community discussion regarding the function of L2 networks. In February, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin commented that L2 advancement toward Stage 2, where networks operate predominantly through smart contracts and permissionless systems instead of centralized core teams, had proven slower and more challenging than anticipated.
