Deutsche Bank Sets Sights on German Crypto Custody Debut, Plans Asian Expansion: Report

The leading German financial institution is reportedly preparing to broaden its custody solutions for digital assets into key Asian markets, driven by the expanding digital asset sector.

According to reports, Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch its cryptocurrency custody offerings in Germany while simultaneously planning to roll out these services throughout various Asian financial hubs during 2027.

Gerald Podobnik, who serves as co-head of Deutsche Bank's corporate banking division, explained to Reuters in a report published Friday that the bank's strategic direction is being influenced by the explosive expansion of the digital asset sector, which now encompasses hundreds of billions of dollars stored in stablecoins.

According to Podobnik, this strategic initiative aligns with Deutsche Bank's broader objectives to accomplish an 8% compound annual growth rate within its corporate banking operations by the year 2028.

Based on a press release issued on Sept. 16, the bank's custody solution will begin by offering support for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and a selection of stablecoins, which include Circle USDC (USDC), EURC (EURC), and AllUnity EUR (EURAU).

In a recent statement to Cointelegraph, a representative from Deutsche Bank indicated that the institution anticipates securing regulatory clearance for its custody services in October, operating under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulations (MiCA). On Monday, the European Securities and Markets Authority's interim MiCA register revealed that Deutsche Bank obtained authorization from Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).

Cointelegraph reached out to Deutsche Bank seeking clarification regarding which specific Asian financial centers the institution intends to prioritize initially, however, no response had been received at the time this article was published.

During September 2023, Deutsche Bank established a partnership with Taurus, a cryptocurrency infrastructure platform, to facilitate and support its cryptocurrency custody ambitions.
