DATA Network announces Sui blockchain migration, plans to shut down independent chain

Previously known as Story, DATA Network announces transition to Sui blockchain and plans to discontinue its own chain, supported by $30 million funding from Sui Foundation.

DATA Network, which previously operated under the name Story, has announced intentions to discontinue its standalone blockchain infrastructure and migrate its AI training data protocol to the Sui network, with the transition supported by $30 million in funding from Sui Foundation.

The Trace registry developed by the project, which made its debut in June, is set to integrate into the Sui ecosystem, according to an announcement made by partners on Monday. Meanwhile, Walrus, a distributed storage solution within the Sui network, is designated to serve as the primary storage infrastructure for applications managed by DATA Foundation and its collaborators.

According to the partners, the decision to migrate was driven by Sui's capability to handle millions of data registrations on a daily basis, combined with Walrus's infrastructure that can accommodate extensive training datasets required for AI applications.

DATA Network's existing blockchain infrastructure will remain operational throughout the transition period until the migration process reaches completion, with plans to release a comprehensive timeline and a detailed transition plan for token holders before the upgrade implementation takes place, according to the announcement.

Originally, Story Protocol functioned as a blockchain platform centered on intellectual property licensing solutions. The project underwent a strategic pivot in June, shifting its focus toward developing a "full stack for AI training data" while simultaneously undergoing a rebrand to become DATA Foundation.

As part of this transformation, the organization introduced Trace, an on-chain registry system designed to track AI training data provenance and manage licensing arrangements.
