Cypherpunk unveils massive Zcash mining operation commanding 18% of total network power

Through a $33.3 million acquisition from Winklevoss Capital, Cypherpunk broadens its ZEC accumulation plan while pursuing a goal of owning 5% of all tokens in circulation.

Cypherpunk Technologies is broadening its presence within the Zcash network by deploying what the company claims to be the largest Zcash mining infrastructure globally following its purchase of mining equipment from Winklevoss Capital, demonstrating increasing institutional appetite for the privacy-centric blockchain.

On Tuesday, Cypherpunk announced it completed the acquisition via an equity-based deal with a valuation of $33.33 million. The mining infrastructure has been activated at multiple locations throughout the United States, generating approximately 4.2 GSol/s, which accounts for roughly 18% of the total current hashrate on the Zcash network.

Should the company's reported numbers prove accurate, this deal positions a single publicly listed entity as controller of a substantial portion of Zcash's overall mining power.

This mining expansion complements Cypherpunk's current Zcash treasury, which presently totals 323,394 ZEC, accounting for approximately 1.9% of the total circulating supply of the cryptocurrency. The firm has established an objective to ultimately acquire 5% of the overall ZEC supply.

Cypherpunk has characterized Zcash mining as delivering superior economic returns compared to Bitcoin mining operations or artificial intelligence data center infrastructure given present market dynamics. Nevertheless, these economic advantages are significantly influenced by variables such as ZEC's market price, the network's hashrate, mining difficulty adjustments and operational expenditures.

This strategic move comes after a substantial increase in ZEC value throughout the latter half of 2025, when resurgent enthusiasm for privacy-centered cryptocurrencies contributed to driving the asset's price upward. The market surge generated heightened awareness around Zcash and related privacy-enhancing technologies following an extended period of relatively subdued market engagement.

Ironwood upgrade addresses risk in Zcash shielded pool

On July 28, the Zcash network completed its Ironwood upgrade, implementing a new shielded transaction protocol designed to replace the Orchard pool and enhance the network's overall security framework.

The implementation came after researchers identified a vulnerability within Orchard that, given specific circumstances, might have enabled a malicious actor to generate fraudulent ZEC inside the shielded pool without triggering immediate detection mechanisms.

Although no evidence suggested the security flaw had been actively exploited, the possibility for undetected ZEC generation represented a threat to the credibility of the cryptocurrency's total supply and underscored the security complexities inherent in privacy-focused transaction systems.
