Crypto Detective ZachXBT Names French Banking Institution in $133M Digital Asset Heist

Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has yet to verify its purported connection to the cryptocurrency heist, with ZachXBT indicating potential losses surpassing $133 million.

Blockchain detective ZachXBT has named Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a French banking institution, as the purported victim of a cryptocurrency theft that has surpassed $133 million in value, with indications that the actual losses may prove to be even more substantial.

The anonymous cryptocurrency investigator revealed on Wednesday that the financial institution, which he noted controls assets worth $235 billion, purportedly suffered the exploit across several days. He further indicated that the total damage may extend beyond current calculations due to over-the-counter (OTC) trading activity that wasn't factored into his previous assessments.

The purported participation of the banking institution remains unconfirmed through independent sources, and ZachXBT has yet to reveal the methods by which the perpetrators obtained access to the digital assets.

Cointelegraph reached out to Crédit Mutuel Arkéa requesting a statement but did not receive any response before this article went to press.

This revelation comes after ZachXBT's first announcement on Monday, during which he flagged more than $106 million in questionable fund withdrawals originating from centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.

By Tuesday, he had updated the projected losses to exceed $133 million following the identification of an additional $27 million in withdrawals, with some of these transactions taking place subsequent to his original alert.

Digital asset analytics company Bitquery had earlier tracked the withdrawals from user accounts on Kraken, Crypto.com and OKX. The firm discovered that roughly $63 million worth of stablecoins had been exchanged for Ether (ETH) in a span of four hours.

Following these findings, Kraken and Crypto.com informed Cointelegraph that they had taken action to restrict certain accounts or freeze assets linked to the alleged theft. Representatives from both cryptocurrency exchanges emphasized that their platforms continued to operate securely.
