Bangkok authorities detain Chinese national linked to $75M global criminal operation

Authorities claim the individual facilitated crypto and fiat currency transactions for criminal organizations using over 133 different accounts.

A 37-year-old Chinese national sought by Chinese authorities for purported participation in a global criminal operation and money laundering activities was apprehended by Thai law enforcement officials.

According to investigators, the criminal network managed transactions exceeding 500 million yuan ($75 million), as reported by Khaosod English, a Thai news outlet, in a Saturday post on X.

Authorities have accused the individual of facilitating foreign-currency and cryptocurrency exchange services for various criminal organizations through more than 133 separate accounts.

Law enforcement officials additionally asserted that the suspect played a role in securing visa documentation for participants in international criminal syndicates connected to separate money-laundering investigations.

According to investigators, the individual made efforts to avoid apprehension by utilizing falsified documentation to register his address and switching vehicle license plates prior to authorities locating him at a high-end residence in Bangkok.

The suspect's Thai visa had lapsed over three years prior, which means he must undergo legal proceedings in Thailand before officials arrange his extradition to China where he faces an active arrest warrant.

In June, Cointelegraph documented that cryptocurrency platform Coinbase suspended access to over $3 million in digital assets connected to an international initiative aimed at combating cyber-enabled cryptocurrency fraud operations in Southeast Asia.

This initiative formed part of Disruption Week, spearheaded by the US Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force, which assembled government agencies and private sector companies to combat cryptocurrency fraud schemes targeting American citizens.

The coordinated effort also included participation from Meta, Microsoft and Starlink, who collaborated to dismantle servers and additional hosting infrastructure associated with fraudulent networks and interrupt criminal operations affecting more than 1.4 million social media and email accounts, resulting in multiple arrests conducted by the Royal Thai Police Anti-Cyber Scam Center.
