BNY Moves Transfer Agency Infrastructure to Blockchain in Digital Asset Expansion

The major custodian bank BNY is rolling out a blockchain-powered transfer agency system, marking a significant step in its digital asset strategy by transitioning essential financial records onto distributed ledger technology.

As one of the globe's leading custodian banking institutions, BNY is making a significant advancement in blockchain-powered financial systems by transitioning fund ownership documentation onto distributed ledger technology.

The financial institution headquartered in New York will introduce a blockchain-powered iteration of its transfer agency operations, responsible for maintaining fund ownership documentation and processing investor transactions, according to a Wednesday report from the Financial Times.

"We think of BNY as modernizing a function that sits behind every single fund transaction by bringing the books and records on-chain," Carolyn Weinberg, BNY's chief product and innovation officer, reportedly said.

This development is part of BNY's wider push into digital assets, which encompasses its regulatory achievements in Europe under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory structure, as the financial institution prepares for the upcoming wave of institutional adoption of blockchain technology.

What are transfer agency records?

Transfer agency services are provided by financial institutions that keep authoritative documentation of shareholder ownership in investment funds. Their responsibilities encompass managing investor transactions, distributing and redeeming fund shares, maintaining current ownership documentation, and facilitating correspondence between investment funds and their shareholders.

Such documentation represents a component of the operational infrastructure that enables investment funds to function. In conventional systems, ownership data is distributed across numerous platforms utilized by fund administrators, custodial institutions, and additional market participants, necessitating continuous reconciliation procedures.

The report indicates that BNY's transfer agency operations encompass approximately $8.6 trillion in assets spanning 7.6 million accounts. The financial institution, which manages over $59 trillion in assets under custody and administration, will continue to operate its conventional transfer agency services in parallel with the new blockchain-based platform.

Baillie Gifford among early users for tokenized funds

Through the migration of transfer agency documentation onto blockchain infrastructure, BNY seeks to establish a unified information source for market participants, minimizing dependence on disparate databases and labor-intensive reconciliation workflows.

Initial adopters of BNY's blockchain-based transfer agency platform include Baillie Gifford, an asset management firm based in Edinburgh, Scotland, which intends to utilize the platform for what the company characterizes as the inaugural "fully native" United Kingdom-regulated tokenized investment fund. BlackRock and BNY Dreyfus money market fund and cash management business are also anticipated to leverage the service for forthcoming tokenized fund offerings.

The firm has roughly $261 billion in assets under management, according to its website.

"What we have in the blockchain is a shared source of record-keeping between the participants. We agree that this is the source of truth when people are dealing with the asset that this is monitoring,"

Theo Golden, Baillie Gifford's head of digital assets

BNY has not disclosed which blockchain network will support the new platform. Cointelegraph approached the company for comment regarding the report but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
