Wealthy Traditional Investors Show Greater Commitment to Bitcoin Holdings, BingX Executive Reports

Kevin Lee, chief strategy officer at BingX, observes that affluent traditional investors demonstrate extended holding periods for Bitcoin, despite family offices maintaining minimal cryptocurrency allocations.

Kevin Lee, serving as chief strategy officer at BingX, observes that traditional wealthy investors—often referred to as "old money"—demonstrate a more patient, long-term strategy toward Bitcoin (BTC) compared to traders native to the cryptocurrency space.

During a fireside conversation at Token2049 with Ciaran Lyons, Cointelegraph's head of multimedia, Lee explained that he frequently engages with "a lot of old money" actively pursuing alternative investment opportunities.

"They have stronger diamond hands than any of us," Lee said.

Lee further explained that Bitcoin's market maturation has reached a scale where affluent investors increasingly view it as a portfolio diversification tool, rather than anticipating it to "go 10x in two weeks."

According to Lee, these wealthy investors represent a largely untapped reservoir of potential cryptocurrency capital, noting that their long-term holding strategy could establish Bitcoin as a legitimate portfolio diversification instrument for a wider range of investors. However, statistics regarding family office participation indicate that widespread acceptance continues to be constrained.

Wealthy crypto investors lean long term, but adoption remains limited

A growing number of wealthy individuals are now emphasizing long-term value appreciation and portfolio diversification as primary motivations for maintaining cryptocurrency positions.

According to Lee, Bitcoin's market expansion has enhanced its credibility as a diversification instrument, pointing to an example where an investor might dedicate 5% to gold holdings and an additional 5% to Bitcoin instead of pursuing quick profits.

Contemporary data indicates that wealthy investors who have already entered the crypto market are adopting an extended time horizon toward the asset category.

On Monday, a CoinShares survey of 2,230 investors with at least $500,000 in investable assets found long-term appreciation and diversification were the leading reasons for investing in crypto, while short-term speculation ranked last. Bitcoin was held by 80% of digital asset investors surveyed.

Despite these trends, cryptocurrency allocations are still distant from becoming a conventional component of wealthy family portfolios.

A JPMorgan report published in February, based on a survey of 333 single-family offices across 30 countries, found that 89% had no cryptocurrency exposure, while their average allocation to crypto and digital assets was just 0.4%. Just 17% of respondents viewed crypto and digital assets as a key investment theme.
