New Privacy Tool from Starknet Shields DeFi Wallet Connections

The Shadow Accounts feature on Starknet enables users to hide links between their primary wallets and DeFi transactions, while keeping all onchain activity publicly accessible.

The Ethereum layer-2 platform Starknet has rolled out a privacy-focused wallet capability that enables users to engage with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications while keeping their activities disconnected from their primary wallet addresses in the public view.

According to StarkWare, the development team responsible for Starknet, the newly introduced Shadow Accounts functionality generates distinct, permanent addresses tailored for specific applications. These accounts can be funded by users through shielded balances stored within the network's STRK20 privacy pool. The system enables users to hold lending positions, execute trades, or manage other DeFi activities using distinct onchain identities.

While the privacy feature masks the link between a shadow account and its funding wallet, the balances, transaction records, and positions associated with these shadow accounts continue to be publicly accessible onchain, Starknet confirmed.

Following integration within a DeFi application, users can utilize the feature by connecting their wallets, toggling from public to private mode, and transferring assets into a vault. The Shadow Accounts then preserve their positions until users decide to withdraw their funds back into a shielded balance.

According to StarkWare, the capability has potential for expansion beyond vaults to encompass liquidity provision, lending, borrowing, staking, derivatives trading, prediction markets and NFT marketplaces.

This launch comes on the heels of StarkWare's wider efforts to advance blockchain privacy. In June, the company unveiled its STRK20 privacy framework, which facilitates private transfers and shielded token balances on Starknet.

During the same month, StarkWare showcased a Private Know Your Customer system that allowed users to complete personal information verification without disclosing their complete identity documents.
