Lido's Latest Upgrade Could Cut Ethereum Validator Numbers by a Third
The liquid staking protocol Lido has rolled out Curated Module v2, a significant upgrade designed to potentially decrease Ethereum's total validator count by approximately one-third through validator consolidation and updated operator guidelines.

The liquid staking protocol Lido, which enables users to generate Ethereum staking rewards via its stETH token, has rolled out a significant upgrade to its staking framework designed to enhance both validator efficiency and promote greater decentralization across the network.
This upgrade brings Curated Module v2 into operation, incorporating support for Ethereum's 0x02 withdrawal credentials. This modification enables validators to expand their effective balance beyond the current 32 ETH threshold to as much as 2,048 ETH, based on information shared in a Lido announcement on Monday.
According to Lido's calculations, the migration process could bring down Ethereum's total validator count from approximately 880,000 to around 628,000, representing a reduction of roughly one-third. The migration process has yet to commence, with these numbers derived from Lido's current projections.
This modification is anticipated to impact Ethereum's consensus layer through a reduction in both the total number of validators and the validator messages needed to sustain network operations, Lido stated. The change is not intended to alter execution-layer activity, which governs transaction fees and gas costs across the network.
Beyond validator consolidation, the update brings new accountability frameworks for Lido's node operators, featuring bonding requirements and penalty mechanisms. According to Lido, future distribution of stake could prioritize additional factors including operator performance metrics, fee structures and contributions made to the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Curated Module v2 is the next major step in that evolution
Lido stated, further noting that the upgrade brings enhanced operator incentives, bond-based security frameworks and governance enhancements to the platform. Lido emphasized that stakers will not need to take any action, as the upgrade implementation will be managed entirely at the protocol level.
