Cryptocurrency Super PAC Invests $362K in California Contest Already Settled by August Voters

Fairshake's affiliate organization backs Aisha Wahab with November advertising campaigns, despite the congresswoman having already secured victory in the district's special election.

An organization affiliated with the crypto-focused Fairshake super political action committee (PAC), known as Protect Progress, has disclosed expenditures totaling $362,000 on advertising campaigns designed to boost a California Democratic candidate, occurring mere weeks following her victory in a special election where she faced the identical challenger.

Based on documentation submitted to the US Federal Election Commission (FEC) this past Sunday, Protect Progress disclosed allocating $362,000 toward media buys backing Democratic incumbent Aisha Wahab in her Bay Area congressional district contest against Melissa Hernandez, a fellow member of her own political party.

In the Aug. 18 special election, Wahab emerged victorious over Hernandez by securing more than 53% of the vote, prompting speculation regarding the rationale behind the crypto industry-backed PAC's decision to continue supporting her campaign during the 2026 midterm electoral cycle.

It's worth highlighting that both candidates, Wahab and Hernandez, received ratings indicating they "strongly supports crypto" following their participation in on-the-record questionnaires administered by Stand With Crypto, a digital asset advocacy organization, prior to the August special election. The purpose of that electoral contest was to identify the individual who would assume Democrat Eric Swalwell's position for the balance of his congressional term, which concludes in January 2027. Swalwell stepped down from his position in April following allegations of sexual assault.

Established in 2023, Fairshake has received substantial financial backing primarily from contributions made by Coinbase, Ripple Labs and Andreessen Horowitz. Following the conclusion of the 2024 US elections, this Super PAC has allocated tens of millions of dollars toward supporting candidates the organization categorizes as "pro-crypto" in strategic efforts to populate Congress with elected officials more inclined to champion policies that benefit the digital asset sector.

During an Oct. 7 debate appearance, Wahab indicated her opposition to Hernandez based on her failure to reject financial contributions from corporate PACs associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), stating that such spending "really deteriorated our democracy." Cointelegraph contacted both the Hernandez and Wahab campaign teams, as well as Fairshake, seeking commentary on the expenditures but had not received immediate responses.

A significant modification distinguishing the August special election from the November midterm contests involves the geographic boundaries of California's 14th congressional district. The existing district lines, which encompass portions of San Francisco's East Bay region, are scheduled for expansion following the 2025 approval of the state's Proposition 50, which mandates revised electoral maps for the upcoming midterm elections.

Fairshake steps up spending in Ohio and Nebraska

In January, the cryptocurrency-focused PAC disclosed that it possessed $193 million in available cash reserves in preparation for the electoral contests, having already deployed tens of millions of dollars to back both Democratic and Republican contenders across primary and special election competitions.

As the 2026 election approaches with just over two weeks remaining, Fairshake has disclosed supplementary expenditures on media campaigns for Senate competitions taking place in Ohio and Nebraska.

Defend American Jobs, an affiliated organization of Fairshake that predominantly backs Republican political candidates, has disclosed spending exceeding $6.7 million in efforts to oppose Independent candidate Dan Osborn in Nebraska's Senate electoral race. Additionally, the PAC has disclosed $8 million in media expenditures throughout Ohio, providing support for incumbent Republican Jon Husted in his contest against Democrat Sherrod Brown in a competitive race where the organization has already spent more than $46 million to date.

The electoral contest involving Brown may serve as another indicator for assessing how the cryptocurrency industry could potentially influence the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections. The Democratic incumbent forfeited his Senate seat to Republican Bernie Moreno during the 2024 election cycle after Fairshake and additional special interest organizations collectively spent combined hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising campaigns opposing Brown.
