Visa launches new platform to power AI agent-driven shopping experiences

The payment giant has introduced a comprehensive platform designed to allow businesses to make their goods accessible and available for purchase through artificial intelligence agents.

Payment processing leader Visa has taken another significant step into the emerging agentic AI payments landscape, unveiling on Wednesday a new platform designed to enable companies to take part in commerce driven by artificial intelligence.

According to a Wednesday announcement, Visa characterized Intelligent Commerce Connect as both a network and protocol, describing it as a "token vault-agnostic 'on-ramp'" specifically built for AI agent developers and retail businesses seeking to enter agentic commerce.

The platform functions as a comprehensive solution for payments initiated by agentic AI, enabling artificial intelligence agents working on behalf of users to explore product offerings, make selections and complete transactions for various products.

"Through a single integration via the Visa Acceptance Platform, Intelligent Commerce Connect enables secure payment initiation, tokenization, spend controls, and authentication," the firm stated.

Blockchain platforms including Ethereum, Tron and Solana, along with various financial technology companies, have been establishing themselves as viable options for enabling AI agents to execute digital payments for users online.

Easy integration to enable agentic AI payments

According to the company's announcement, Intelligent Commerce Connect accommodates both Visa-branded and non-Visa card payment methods and works seamlessly with prominent AI agent protocols currently available.

Additionally, the platform ensures that merchant product listings become visible and searchable across AI-powered systems, while managing critical functions including tokenization, expenditure limitations, user authentication, and Payment Card Industry compliance requirements, all accessible via a single integration point on the Visa Acceptance Platform.

The platform is presently undergoing pilot testing with carefully chosen partner organizations, with plans for a more extensive public launch scheduled for later in 2026.

This wasn't Visa's initial venture into the realm of agentic AI payment solutions, as the company had previously revealed an experimental offering dubbed "Visa CLI" in March, which provided AI agents with the capability to execute same-day payment transactions.

Nevermined integrates with Visa using x402

In an accompanying announcement, artificial intelligence fintech company Nevermined revealed its integration with Visa's newly launched Intelligent Commerce platform through the implementation of Coinbase's x402 protocol, granting AI agents the ability to autonomously purchase digital products and services.

The system allows users to register their Visa payment cards and establish personalized spending parameters, empowering AI agents to conduct transactions independently while adhering to those predefined boundaries, with merchants receiving payments via their current payment processing systems.

"x402 gives agents an open standard to request payment programmatically, and this launch demonstrates how that can work alongside secure card infrastructure to enable real commercial transactions between AI agents and merchants," said Erik Reppel, the creator of the protocol.

According to data available on the protocol's official website, x402 has successfully handled $24 million in total transaction volume throughout the preceding 30 days.
