Tether Unveils Open-Source Bitcoin Mining Operating System

Stablecoin giant Tether introduces MiningOS, a free, open-source platform for Bitcoin mining designed to democratize the industry from individual miners to enterprise-level facilities.

The company behind the world's leading stablecoin, Tether, has unveiled its open-source software for Bitcoin mining operations, positioning it as a solution to streamline and expand Bitcoin mining activities while driving greater decentralization throughout the industry.

Through a Monday announcement on X, Tether revealed the launch of MiningOS (MOS), characterizing the software stack as a flexible, expandable operating system designed for diverse users ranging from individual enthusiasts to enterprise-level mining operations.

"The mining industry has long been limited by closed systems and proprietary tools. MiningOS changes that — introducing transparency, openness, and collaboration into the core of Bitcoin infrastructure," Tether stated on its new MOS website.

"No black boxes. No lock-in. No Limits," Tether added.

The MiningOS platform from Tether delivers a self-hosted mining framework that establishes communication with additional devices through an integrated peer-to-peer network.

Accompanying the service is a platform that allows mining operators to easily modify configurations to align with their operational scale and performance needs.

In conjunction with Tether's announcement, CEO Paolo Ardoino said MiningOS is a "complete operational platform that can scale from a home setup to industrial grade site, even across multiple geographies."

The stablecoin issuer first revealed its intentions to develop an open-source Bitcoin mining OS in June last year, with the company emphasizing the critical need for emerging miners to have the ability to "enter the game and compete" without relying on costly third-party vendors.

With this release, Tether positions itself alongside other prominent cryptocurrency industry players, such as Jack Dorsey's Block, in delivering an open-source Bitcoin mining stack. However, in contrast to Block's software, which is engineered to function exclusively with its proprietary mining hardware, Tether's MiningOS is reportedly developed for interoperability with a diverse array of infrastructure.

"MiningOS is open source under the Apache 2.0 License — free to use, free to build on, free to improve. Built on Holepunch P2P protocols — meaning no centralised services, no backdoors, and no third-party dependencies," Tether said.

This initiative from Tether represents yet another substantial undertaking by the company extending beyond its stablecoin offerings. Throughout 2025, Tether executed a range of strategic investments encompassing tokenization, artificial intelligence, and decentralized finance sectors and also became a stronger hoarder of gold and Bitcoin.
