Pure Cryptocurrency Exchanges Becoming Obsolete, Says Bybit Chief Executive
In a global campaign, Bybit presents itself as an all-encompassing financial platform, despite having offered stock, gold, and forex derivatives previously.

According to Bybit co-founder and CEO Ben Zhou, who spoke with Cointelegraph on Thursday, the days of exchanges focused exclusively on cryptocurrency trading are coming to an end as users increasingly demand access to traditional assets like stocks and gold, as well as payment services, all integrated with their digital asset holdings.
"The people who trade crypto also want stocks, gold, forex, indices, and derivatives. They want to pay, save, and grow their wealth in the same place."Ben Zhou, Bybit CEO
Zhou's statements came alongside the unveiling of "Make Your Move," Bybit's new campaign that reframes the exchange as a comprehensive financial platform rather than a crypto-only venue. The platform has already made available derivatives products linked to stocks, gold and indexes, in addition to forex offerings. These financial instruments allow users to gain price exposure to these assets without requiring direct ownership of the underlying securities.
The strategic repositioning by Bybit is taking place against a backdrop of multiple well-known cryptocurrency exchanges shuttering their operations. After more than a decade in operation, BitMEX ceased all trading activities on Wednesday, while CoinEx made public its own wind-down plans this month, pointing to diminishing trading volumes and mounting compliance expenses as key factors. BitMart had initially revealed intentions to shut down operations in July but is currently evaluating a potential restructuring arrangement that might enable certain aspects of its business to continue operating.
At the same time, competing platform Coinbase is pursuing its own expansion strategy through what it calls the "Everything Exchange" initiative, incorporating stocks and prediction markets into its platform to complement its cryptocurrency offerings.
"The next generation of financial platforms won't be built around a single asset class."Ben Zhou, Bybit CEO
