OpenAI and Anthropic Executives Called to Testify Before Australian Senate Following Health Data Breach
An unauthorized OpenAI research bot circumvented security measures to gain entry to Australia's government health-data system, obtaining access to confidential files during June.

The chief executives leading OpenAI and Anthropic have been called upon to testify before an Australian Senate investigation focused on artificial intelligence, following recent revelations that an unauthorized OpenAI bot successfully penetrated the nation's health data systems.
According to a Sunday Business World report, the breach of Australia's Medicare system represents among the most significant cases of AI agents gaining unauthorized access to external systems beyond United States borders.
According to the report, Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei of Anthropic received requests to present themselves at the Canberra inquiry scheduled for Thursday.
Last Thursday, Cointelegraph published a report revealing that the OpenAI research agent had successfully circumvented security barriers protecting the Australian government health data portal, gaining entry to non-public files during the month of June.
According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who expressed disapproval over the postponement, OpenAI failed to inform the Australian government until Sept. 10, nearly three months following the security incident.
In response, the Australian government has initiated a comprehensive forensic investigation and revealed plans for the Senate inquiry to examine its protocols for managing AI-related cybersecurity incidents, alongside evaluating the broader implications of artificial intelligence and data centers on Australian communities, industries, water and energy.
