Italian Banking Giant UniCredit Looks for Tech Partner to Enable Crypto Services: Report

Italy's UniCredit is looking for a technology partner to help roll out cryptocurrency trading and custody services, along with tokenized investment offerings.

Italy's UniCredit Bank is actively searching for a technology partner capable of helping the institution establish the necessary infrastructure for digital asset trading operations, custody solutions, and providing access to investment products based on tokenization.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Bloomberg on Friday, the Italian banking institution's conversations remain in preliminary phases. The bank's areas of focus encompass cryptocurrency custody and brokerage functionalities, investment products utilizing tokenization technology, and fixed-income securities built on stablecoin frameworks.

UniCredit has been contacted by Cointelegraph for additional commentary regarding which technology partner might be selected to address this infrastructure requirement.

Major financial institutions worldwide are conducting trials with digital asset infrastructure and stablecoin systems. This includes U.S. Bank, ranked as the fifth–largest commercial banking institution in America, which successfully executed a live international payment transaction utilizing its proprietary USBDC stablecoin earlier this Wednesday.

Standard Chartered, the multinational banking corporation based in London, introduced spot Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) trading services for its institutional client base in the United Arab Emirates on Sept. 3. The financial institution had previously rolled out digital asset custody capabilities in the same region in September 2024.

In August, Leumi, which holds the position as Israel's largest banking institution, formed a partnership with Galaxy Digital to provide its customers with trading access to Bitcoin, Ether and Solana (SOL) via the bank's investment platform. This service is anticipated to go live in early 2027.
