Ethereum's Buterin announces split from organization that received his SHIB donation

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly stated he no longer maintains close ties with the Future of Life Institute following changes to the organization's direction after receiving his 2021 SHIB contribution.

On Friday, Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, revealed that his close alignment with the Future of Life Institute has ended, an organization that was among the recipients of SHIB tokens he donated back in 2021.

According to Buterin, when the institute initially approached him, they presented a comprehensive roadmap focused on mitigating existential risks spanning multiple domains, including artificial intelligence threats, biological hazards and nuclear dangers, alongside broader initiatives supporting peace and epistemics. This comprehensive vision, he explained, was a key factor that influenced his decision to make the Shiba Inu (SHIB) donation.

However, Buterin noted that the institute's focus subsequently pivoted toward engaging in cultural and political advocacy specifically centered on AI-related risks, a strategic direction he characterized as substantially different from what was originally presented to him at the time of his donation.

My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools is a thing that can easily lead to unintended outcomes, cause backlashes, and solve problems in a way that is both authoritarian and fragile, even if it was not originally intended that way.

Buterin expresses disagreements to FLI's current approach

The Future of Life Institute characterizes its core mission as working to reduce extreme risks facing humanity and guiding transformative technologies toward outcomes that benefit all of society.

We need policies to help ensure that AI development improves lives everywhere – rather than merely boosts corporate profits.

Despite this stated mission, Buterin pointed out that certain proposals advanced by the organization emphasize implementing safeguards within biosynthesis devices and AI models designed to prevent these systems from generating harmful outputs.

I view this as a very fragile solution: there are many ways to jailbreak, fine-tune or otherwise get around such restrictions.

Cointelegraph contacted the Future of Life Institute seeking commentary on Buterin's statements, but the organization had not provided a response at the time of publication.

FLI cashed out $500 million from the SHIB donation

During 2021, Buterin found himself in possession of substantial quantities of SHIB tokens along with other dog-themed cryptocurrency tokens after developers employed his name as a promotional strategy. Subsequently, he chose to distribute portions of those tokens to various charitable causes.

The Future of Life Institute stood among the organizations selected to receive tokens from Buterin. Nevertheless, he stated that he had not anticipated the donated tokens would ultimately be worth approximately half a billion dollars.

I thought that surely they would cash out at most $10-25M, because there's no way the SHIB market is deep enough to cash out more. Instead, they managed to cash out something like $500M.

In June 2021, the Future of Life Institute publicly announced the launch of a $25 million multi-year grants program that had been enabled through support provided by Buterin and the Shiba Inu community.
