Traditional Finance Wealth-Building System Fails Majority of Investors: CEO of Hyperliquid

Retail investors are locked out of early-stage wealth-building opportunities on Wall Street, but Hyperliquid's CEO says perpetual contracts offer a democratizing solution to this problem.

The conventional wealth-building mechanisms of Wall Street, including equity in companies, continue to be predominantly out of reach for everyday investors until such companies achieve public exchange listings, which means retail traders forfeit the most substantial appreciation that occurs before listing, according to Jeff Yan, co-founder and CEO of Hyperliquid.

"Some assets are only tradable by a few people for many orders of magnitude of its growth, and then ultimately tradable by the public only after all of the growth has been realized by a select few people with privilege," said Yan during a Tuesday fireside chat at Token2049 Singapore.

Though he perceived this pattern as an element of the wider economic system, Yan emphasized that such a wealth-creation framework is not "sustainable."

According to Yan, the expanding revenue stream of Hyperliquid stems from establishing broader worldwide access to blockchain-powered wealth-building opportunities via the decentralized exchange platform.

Financial accessibility drives Hyperliquid's purpose, revenue generation secondary: CEO

The primary objective of Hyperliquid centers on expanding access to opportunities for wealth building and encouraging greater involvement in financial systems, with revenue serving merely as a secondary outcome, Yan clarified, further stating:

"We're not really optimizing for revenue. That's a byproduct of providing value to users."

According to him, one factor contributing to Hyperliquid's achievements is that its perpetual futures contracts lack expiration dates, which minimizes the decision-making burden on traders and avoids the fragmentation of liquidity across multiple contract periods.

According to data from DefiLlama, Hyperliquid holds the position of third-largest protocol in terms of revenue generation, having produced $72 million over the preceding 30 days.

Blockchain-based perpetual contracts could disrupt traditional finance: Pantera

Perpetual futures contracts have the potential to emerge as a leading trading vehicle in worldwide financial markets because of their inherent structural benefits, with Hyperliquid illustrating how blockchain technology could pose a threat to conventional market systems, according to Pantera, an asset management firm focused on blockchain investments, in a July statement.

The expansion of Hyperliquid has also captured interest from legacy financial sector players, including Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent organization of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), whose chief executive Jeffrey Sprecher called on regulatory authorities to establish a "level playing field" that would enable the introduction of round-the-clock onchain perpetual futures trading.

During March, the NYSE formed a partnership with Securitize, a tokenization platform, as one component of a wider initiative to build blockchain-powered infrastructure for equity trading that features continuous 24/7 trading and settlement capabilities for Wall Street.
