Ledger Launches $849 Atom Wallet With Enhanced Security, Available 2027

Just days after verifying that tampered hardware wallets were distributed by an authorized Asian partner, Ledger has announced Atom, a next-generation crypto security device featuring advanced anti-tampering technology.

On Thursday, the French hardware wallet manufacturer revealed a new product featuring enhanced security measures to prevent tampering, just days following the confirmation that certain wallets distributed via an Asian reseller had been compromised with malicious hardware implants.

Ledger announced Atom, priced at $849, which merges cryptocurrency wallet functionality with standard mobile applications through a design that resembles a smartphone. The device maintains a clear separation between Android applications and critical wallet functions, incorporating security measures that Ledger claims would have prevented the type of implants discovered in the recent Asian distribution incident. Additionally, the device is designed to identify tampering attempts even while in an off state.

According to an announcement provided to Cointelegraph, the company anticipates beginning shipments of the device during the summer months of 2027.

Additional features planned for Atom include support for AI agent approvals, capabilities for encrypted messaging, and integration of post-quantum cryptography, according to Ledger.

This product launch comes in the wake of a security breach that came to light on Friday, which involved the discovery of malicious implants embedded in wallets distributed through the authorized reseller CryptoBilis. In response, Ledger has called upon distributors operating in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to halt sales of its hardware products. Meanwhile, MediaMarkt, a major European retail chain, has removed Ledger wallet products from its store shelves.

When questioned about the timeline for developing Atom's anti-tampering security features, a company spokesperson stated that the development was not initiated as a reaction to specific isolated security incidents. However, the spokesperson declined to share details regarding the development timeline.

In an additional blog post published on Thursday, Ledger announced the implementation of new guidelines mandating that authorized resellers must keep devices stored away from public display areas and deliver them directly to customers during the point of purchase. The company also emphasized once again that returned devices must not be placed back into inventory for resale under any circumstances.
