International travelers can now use USDT via Binance Pay across PayPay's Japan network
Through HIVEX integration, Binance Pay enables international visitors to utilize USDT for purchases at PayPay-accepting businesses throughout Japan, with merchants being paid in Japanese yen.
Starting Wednesday, Binance Pay will enable qualified international visitors traveling to Japan to make purchases using Tether USDt (USDT) at nearly all merchants that accept PayPay throughout the country.
The functionality will be powered by HIVEX, an interoperability framework for payments that links international QR-based payment platforms to businesses in Japan that support PayPay. The merchants themselves will continue to receive their payments in Japanese yen as usual.
According to statements made to Cointelegraph by Binance, it represents the inaugural cryptocurrency payment platform to gain access to PayPay-accepting merchants via the HIVEX framework. The company noted that merchants won't be required to complete any separate opt-in process.
As a Japanese digital payment solution, PayPay has achieved acceptance at millions of locations across the nation, encompassing major retail chains, independent small businesses, automated vending machines, taxi services and public transit systems. Through the HIVEX integration, PayPay currently supports nine additional international payment services, predominantly originating from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
According to data from the Japan Tourism Agency, Japan experienced an unprecedented 42.7 million international visitors throughout 2025, establishing a new record. When examining the most recent comparable international rankings, which were compiled using 2024 data, Japan secured the ninth position globally and claimed the top spot within Asia.
The nation saw 3.1 million visitor arrivals during August, representing a 9.6% decrease compared to the same month one year prior, which brought the cumulative total for the initial eight months of 2026 to 27.6 million, reflecting a 2.7% decline, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization.
