FBI Collaborates with Binance on Asset Recovery After Massive $6.3B Security Breach

Following a major security breach, Binance has allocated over $6.3 billion from its reserves to address the deficit while collaborating with authorities to retrieve $3 billion in frozen assets.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Binance has partnered with the FBI on Friday to assist in retrieving portions of the assets taken in what stands as a historic $6.3 billion security breach.

Efforts to reach the FBI by Cointelegraph for additional information regarding this partnership were unsuccessful as of the time this story went to press.

The digital asset trading platform disclosed its partnership with law enforcement authorities through a post on X on Friday, though it did not identify which specific agencies were participating in the collaboration.

According to Binance, industry partners have already successfully frozen $3 billion of the compromised funds, and the exchange is now coordinating with law enforcement officials to facilitate their recovery. The platform announced it had set aside more than $6.34 billion from its corporate reserves to compensate for the shortfall, with $5 billion of this amount already being held in the precise tokens that were compromised.

With total assets amounting to $134 billion in reserves, Binance maintains its position as the world's largest cryptocurrency trading platform. Data from DefiLlama indicates the exchange had experienced approximately $6 billion in withdrawals over the preceding 24-hour period.

Back in February 2022, the US Department of Justice announced that various law enforcement entities, including the FBI, successfully confiscated 94,000 Bitcoin (BTC), which carried a valuation of $3.6 billion at that point in time, connected to the 2016 security breach at Bitfinex exchange.
