Ethereum Economic Zone Demonstrates Atomic Cross-Chain Transfer Between L1 and L2

A developer working on EEZ showcased a cross-chain transfer test involving 0.001 ETH, part of efforts to build infrastructure linking Ethereum's mainnet with layer-2 solutions.

A contributor to the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has reported successfully testing an atomic transaction that bridges Ethereum's mainnet with a layer-2 network.

Eduardo Antuña Díez, a developer working on EEZ, revealed the transaction on Tuesday, describing it as the inaugural "first atomic cross-chain" transfer between L1 and L2. Documentation of the transaction shows logs indicating a cross-chain call that moved 0.001 Ether (ETH) alongside a state update for a rollup network.

Within an atomic transaction, interconnected operations across different networks must either complete successfully together or be entirely rolled back should any component encounter failure.

Back in March, the developers responsible for creating the EEZ explained that the framework's purpose was to enable rollups to communicate with one another and with Ethereum's mainnet in a single transaction, eliminating the need for traditional bridges. The initiative seeks to reunify liquidity and applications that have become scattered across distinct L2 networks.

Friederike Ernst, co-founder of Gnosis, had previously explained to Cointelegraph that the absence of synchronous composability compels protocols to operate separate deployments on different L2s, which results in liquidity being fragmented into numerous separate markets.

Hydration co-founder Jakub Gregus, who works on a decentralized finance protocol, described the demonstration as "one of the most important milestones" in the cryptocurrency space, noting that this technology has the potential to deliver direct benefits to Ethereum.
